Kickin' Cancer: One Song at a Time

For anyone who doesn't know Daniel well, let me just start by saying this: Daniel is a fighter. A fighter for human peace, dignity, and equality. He firmly believes that every man woman and child of every culture of the world deserve a chance. A chance to not only survive in this brutal world, but a chance to really live. He is a beautiful soul, but now he is standing face to face with a huge roadblock.

As they say, the worse things happen to the best people.

On June 5, 2015, Daniel was personally introduced to the scariest word on the planet: Cancer. After that, he couldn’t hear much else, except for the fact that he needed immediate surgery in just a couple days.

On June 8, Daniel went in for surgery. Everyone was so relieved when it was finished. Daniel came out of the surgery like a champ and he thought it was all over.

We waited and waited for the pathology report to come back and affirm our hopes that Daniel was now in the clear. However, when the report came back, it shattered his vision of returning to normal. With the pathology report, we learned that Daniel has a very rare and aggressive form of testicular cancer. The bottom line was that Daniel needed more treatment.

He went through stages of fear, denial, and grief before embarking on an oasis with family who helped him face a difficult decision. He had the daunting task of deciding between a highly specialized, invasive, and brutal surgery several states away, or rounds of chemotherapy with harsh side effects, some of which may be permanent.

In the end, he chose chemo so he could be close to his family.

Now his cancer team at The Thomas Johns Cancer Center is doing their best to fight the disease, but here is where we can help. His oncologist has required him not to work at all for at least three months because of the frequency and intensity of the BEP chemo treatment. He is now facing the exorbitant costs of treating cancer.  Medical bills are a huge burden on anyone, but to make it worse, Daniel doesn't have health insurance at all. He thought he was too young and invincible to need health insurance. However, now he is learning (the VERY hard way) that no one is immortal. So, until he can enroll in health insurance in several months, he is paying all of the bills for surgeries, scans, and treatments out of pocket.

In the early days of his treatment, he was well enough to pursue a couple grants to help defray the costs; however, if awarded, they will only be a drop in the bucket. He is trying his hardest to help himself and be independent, but now he just needs to focus on getting himself healthy.

Due to his humble nature, Daniel would always help someone else before he asked for help himself. It is my plea, with our sister and cousins to rally like we do, and help him wrap up this album session of “The Blues”.

Please help me give Daniel a screaming, fighting chance to crush this nasty cancer and fully return to the people and things he loves: his family and his music.
