Tania and AJ Memorial Scholarship Fund

$23,826 of $50,000 goal

Raised by 76 people in 54 months
On September 29th, 2013, my wife Tania Marisol Vercher and son, Alejandro Julian Vercher were involved in a car accident which took their lives. Tania died at the scene of the accident, while I spent the next 36 hours at the bedside of my son, only to learn that he would not recover. He passed away on September 30th, 2013.

In the days and months that have followed their loss, I have looked for meaning beyond their passing. Both of them meant not only the world to me, but to everyone who knew them.

The arts were important to them. Tania was a photographer whose worked touched the lives of many, and my son's fascination and love of music never ceased to amaze me.

Tania also had a saying, and that is that a little help from a lot of people becomes a lot of help. I believe this to be true, and so it is in their honor that I am beginning this campaign.

Through the help of many individuals, I am seeking to raise $50,000 to begin a set of scholarhips in their honor. Currently, I am working with my alma mater, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and with Lamar State College Port Arthur on funding endowed scholarhips in their names.

It is my hope that through coming together to support this endeavor, we might offer others the opportunity to study the creative arts. The arts so richly blessed me and my family, and knowing others can be continually blessed in Tania and AJ's names means the world to me.

Yours in Music, as in Life,
                                Heath Vercher

Well, it is almost 1:30 in the morning, but after looking over all the donations from around my birthday, tallying up totals from the Photomundo plate sale fundraisers and funds from other sources, we've made it to nearly $15,000 in just under six months. Thank you ALL for supporting these efforts in each and every way possible!

Well, with the exception of one more week's worth of donations from the Elizalde's weekly plate sales, we're at $8,855! And I've already received confirmation that the amount raised from plate sales on July 28 came close to $1,600, so that puts us just over $10,000 and on our way to reaching 25% of our goal and we haven't even reached the middle of August.

I have to say, this endeavor has taken on somewhat of a life of its own, and it is so inspiring to see the kind of legacy Tania has left in her absence.

I am grateful to everyone who has been willing to help us reach our goal and to contribute to this cause. God bless you all, and thank you so much for what we've already accomplished!

After double-checking the counting and adding it all up, I was right! We cracked the $5,000 amount before the start of June. We raised a total of $5,076 for the month of May.. That's 10% of our goal! Thank you everyone.. we are off to a wonderful start!

Happy to say that after our first week of fundraising, including donations from the open house at the Houston Ballroom, right now we stand at $2,320, just shy of 5% of our goal. Not bad for a week's work.

Thank you to everyone who has been sharing the fundraiser page, talking about the project, and donating. We've got a long road ahead of us, but we're off to a great start!

God bless you all!

Hey Heath, it's been awhile, and a shock as I shared your tragedy to my fellow Unitarian Congregation in Houlton, ME last year. I lit a candle for you and the passing of your loved ones, and many have you in their thoughts and prayers in the Congregaton as well, I am sure are staying strong, still making music... You have inspired me, and always shall and always will be my friend and little brother... We went to school together from middle to high school in that smal podunk "town." Which I will never forgive or forget those people, but I know you were supporting me along with your family (which I consider mine as well!), I live to do music just as you inspired me, and I still write games on the computer... I wish I could help and support you financially, but all I can do for now is be there as the friend and brother I used to and always shall be! I love you man! PS Friend me on Facebook (under "emparallax", was supposed to be a music project to undergo but I got other ideas...)
