Let's Rally Around Rachel!
My name is Beth Starowitz and I have known Rachel Lutey Blecha and her family since she was a little girl. She's all grown up now and has a family of her own but, when I learned that Rachel was facing some very big medical and financial challenges I knew that I had to help. Once you hear her story, I hope you will too!
Back in the Spring of 2015 Rachel's life changed when she had a stroke. It was then discovered that she had a hole in her heart. Although the hole was surgically repaired, she had a second stroke in the Fall. Doctors could not explain why this stroke happened and so she was sent to Cleveland Clinic for answers but, the Doctors there could not find a reason for the second stroke. Her medical insurance would not cover this care, nor the cost of travel, meals, and accommodations. She is now under the care of a team of specialists at Strong Memorial Hospital including a neurologist, neurosurgeon, neuro opthamologist, heart surgeon, and cardiologist. She is undergoing more tests to find the cause of the strokes and to prevent future strokes.
The second stroke has left Rachel with weakness on her left side, tingling in her arm, loss of her peripheral vision, short term memory loss, other cognitive issues, and extreme exhaustion. Every day illnesses cause her to feel as if she is having another stroke and visits to the emergency room and stays in the critical care unit are needed. While Rachel has returned to her full time job she is only able to work for a half day before exhaustion sends her home again. All of her sick time has been used. Now the family is facing a financial crisis.
Rachel and her family have given so much of their time and energy to our community, coaching little league cheerleading at Tritown, coaching youth hockey, and fund raising for others. Now it's time to give something back to them. With the support of friends, family and the community Rachel will have a chance to overcome the physical, mental, and financial struggles she is now facing so that she can watch her girls grow up.
