January 7th, 2016, my cousin Shelby's life changed forever.
Unbeknownst to her, the garage apartment she had been living in for over 10 years had a gas leak. When she went to light some incense, the flames exploded all around her. She instantly ran out of the house but by this point she was already on fire. She ran into the landlords home where she jumped into the shower to get the fire off of her. She sustained 3rd degree burns over 30% of her body, mostly appearing on her arms, chest, back, ears and face and her hair, eyebrows and eyelashes were singed off. Her skin graft surgeries begin Monday, at The Grossman Burn Center in California and the doctors are anticipating her being in the hospital for at least 4 weeks.
In terms of her home, she lost everything. Every childhood memory, every piece of family memorabilia, her clothes, jewelry, literally, everything is gone. I know most of us can't even comprehend this kind of loss, let alone the trauma she is facing with so much of her body being severely burned. The mental and physical anguish she is facing is literally indescribable.
We are so thankful to God for sparing Shelby's life but we know the road to recovery will be a very hard and painful one. We are asking that you join with our family, in whatever way you can, to help Shelby rebuild. Not only will she need to rebuild materially but also mentally and physically. Rebuilding her life from scratch will be an expensive process, and with no renters insurance we can only imagine the financial burden she will face.
I know most of you don't know Shelby, and you may not even know me, but if you feel called to give in whatever way you can, whether it be through prayer, monetary means, or letters of encouragement, I beg you to do so. She needs love, encouragement and support desperately. Thank you for reading her story and being a part of her journey to recovery.
