Help the Billwiller Family
Braedyn, the youngest boy, is going for surgery on Thursday January 21st to have his right lung removed. This is a very serious procedure, and will be a long recovery. He will need his family beside him in Vancouver.
The problem is, you can't work on Salt Spring Island while your child is recovering in hospital in Vancouver.
Let's give back to this incredible Salt Spring family. They deserve it. Let's pay their mortgage and groceries and bills and transportation fees, and make their road ahead just a little bit easier. Just like they've done for us so many times.
If you are not comfortable donating online, then cash donations are being accepted at Slegg Lumber - ask for Andy.
Braedyn had follow up xrays. He still has pleural effusion but the surgeon is hopeful that it will go away on its own. His last surgery was shocking so we are still confused as who to listen to or trust. The cancer has (from what we have been told ) all now been removed from his lung and all of the lymph nodes in his chest removed.
Dr. Sue O'Dorisio Is a Pediatric Neuroendocrine Tumors specialist/ researcher in Iowa. She
has recommended a few tests that he should have. One being a CT scan of his liver, which we are waiting for. Often this is the next place that these tumours hide in. The other tests are out of our reach at this time as we don't have the equipment here in Canada. All of his records are being sent to her so she can give her input. Oddly the " non specialist" Drs that are monitoring braedyn here don't feel that her suggestions are necessary. There description of this type of cancer is different than that of the Drs that specialize in this type of cancer.
So if he had a heart condition should I listen to the Drs that specialize in orthopedic surgery or the heart surgeon?
He will be followed closely with PET scans every 6 months and respiratory therapy.
Braedyn was very excited to go back to school yesterday but unfortunately became ill again. Hopefully tomorrow he will be good enough to go back to school! Baseball is out for him this season but he will be cheering everyone on!
Thanks again to everyone! It's been the toughest thing that we have ever encounter but with everyone's support we are getting through it.

We have been back in Vancouver for at the Easter seal house.
Things are much scarier for braedyn this time. With the past two surgeries so fresh in his mind he is not ok with the next one. He will be having complete mediastinal lymph node dissection. ( I'm not sure if that's what it's called) I've been doing everything possible to try and keep him busy and his mind off of it.
We met the new anesthesiologist on Friday. He made us feel a little less stressed. His surgery is tomorrow ( Wednesday March 2nd) at Vancouver general hospital. This one should be about 3 hours. His surgeon is the head of Thorasic surgery in all of greater Vancouver. He assures us that he will be treated wonderfully being a child in an adult hospital.
Things are quite different this time. Because his treatment and appointments are now being done at Vancouver general hospital we aren't getting the same care as we received at children's. BC residency program no longer helps with costs. I know longer have a social worker assisting us. We are on our own. I am to call them back when our appointments return to Children's Hospital. I have had the most emotional past few weeks as I discover that We only seem to matter if braedyn is being treated at BC Children's hospital. But we aren't because why? Honestly I'm not even sure. Why couldn't the surgeon that originally did the surgery do the surgery to fix what wasn't completed? Does he not need a pediatric oncologist? Is she not still looking after him and following his care? I have so many unanswered questions. I honestly feel like they made a mistake and now are just washing their hands of it and slammed the door in our faces. We have not even heard from the surgeons office! Anyway I'm definitely in the angry stage. Very angry. But I can't let that get in the way of Braedyns care. Please keep positive thoughts for Braedyn. I'm hoping they finally get all of the cancer out of him tomorrow. The next few weeks of recovery are rough but together we can help him through it. Thanks everyone for all of the positive thoughts and wishes.
Heartbreaking Lisa. Gracie and I are sending all our love. Let me know if I can help in ANY way.
Lisa, there is a SW at VGH. Ask to be directed to them and share your concerns with them. That is what they are there for. I am sure they will work with you around your concerns.
We love you and your amazing family Lisa. Thank you for sharing your life. I know many people here in S cotland who believe in the power and strength of prayer. We will be collectively praying for Braedyn. I encourage others on Salt Spring to do the same. Organize small groups and pray together.
