We're fundraising for Fundación Cielo, the non-profit organization that we will be working for this summer in the Yucatán peninsula in Mexico.
Fundación Cielo is an organization that works with Mayan communities in the Yucatán state in Mexico with the goal of breaking the cycle of extreme poverty through access to educational programing and resources. Fundación Cielo was started in 2014 by the founders of the Yucatan-based, family- run company Hammock Boutique. They realized that though their company provided locals with the opportunity to make a living through weaving hammocks in their Mayan tradition, their employees had many other needs that were not being met. So the family founded Fundación Cielo to help meet these needs with the ultimate goal to lift the people out of extreme poverty.
This summer we will be living and working in the villages of Teabo and Chumayel to implement various initiatives with this goal in mind. These programs include daily activities and sports with the children, tutoring, a mentorship program that connects local college and high school students, and a health week that teaches important information about hygiene, healthy eating, and staying well, and brings in professionals to consult about this issues.
Each one of these programs has a direct and meaningful impact and every dollar counts in helping Fundación Cielo bring these programs to fruition and work towards their goal of breaking the cycle of poverty in these communities. We need to raise $3000 to cover the costs associated with implementing our programming (think arts and crafts, sports, and tutoring materials, and facilitating the visits of the health professionals), as well as costs associated with supporting us interns (food, housing, and transportation around the region). We hope that you will consider donating because any amount directly helps the people of Teabo and Chumayel!
***Additionally, any money we raise that exceeds our goal will go towards the building of a Community Center in Teabo that will house Fundación Cielo projects in the future***
