I worked for 7 years in the Maine school system, and then I lost my job. Because of the circumstances, I pulled my 3 children out of school, (my 4th child is in the army) and decided to homeschool them.
We raise chickens and ducks. We have cats and dogs. And unfortunately, while we own 50 acres of land here in Northeastern Maine, our house is 15 feet from the road. And our road is considered a highway.
We have lost countless cats to the road, Lately, we've been losing our birds as well. Our birds are free range, but in the past two weeks, we've had an unusually high number hit by cars.
I'm starting this page because I want to build a barn for my girls. (My birds, who all have names) Our birds mean to us what other people consider love for their dogs or étc. They are our pets, they give us food, and they need protection.
I want to build a barn for them. I have more than enough room, but not enough resources.
I'm also a photographer, and anyone who has followed my work , knows that 90 percent of what I do is 90 percent animals...
My birds live in my house for typically 3 months before we move them outside ((depending on the weather, and their feathering)), which means early morning feedings, and daily cleanings.
We are not much different than anyone else who does what we do.
But, we do look at our birds as pets. ((and well taken care of as a food source))
We hate to keep them from doing their natural thing ((their fencing makes me feel guilty)), but as long as people are careless ((and so many are)) , this is the only way I know how to protect them.
And that's all I want.
