Ghana 2018

Gage Foundation International Girls Ambassadors for Human Rights will be traveling to Ghana in July 2018. We will be exploring the culture of Ghana and meeting with women and girls from all walks of life. We will also be helping to create a school library while there.

The program’s mission: to empower and inspire young woman to become agents of change on the local, national and global stage.

The program aims to make young women into leaders. The Girl Ambassadors, are responsible for organizing programs, speakers and activities in a chosen area of concentration, including: Women’s Rights, Haudenosaunee Cultural Exploration, Religious Freedom, Gender Justice, and Human Trafficking. We organize the presentations and activities to explore these topics within the complex relationship between religion, the economy, and the status of women in other countries as well as in the United States.

Throughout the year we get to know a group of high school aged girls from Ghana through Skype. In addition, we attend educational events. In July we attended Convention Days in Seneca Falls; in January 2018 we marched for women's justice in Seneca Falls, and over spring break we will return to an Akwesasne Reservation and stay in a Long House. However, our most exciting trip will be in July of 2018 when we travel to Ghana, Africa--but we need your support!

Among the many educational and cultural experiences we have planned are: a stay in a fishing village; a visit to a national museum of indigenous rights and a museum of trans-formative justice; drumming lessons; interviews with a female school master, refugee women from Liberia, a tribal leader, women from the Jewish village of Sefwe Wiawosa, and gay identified women to discuss their significant challenges; and we plan to visit the Elmina Slave Fort. We will work with the women and girls to think outside the box for ways to improve their education and earning potential.

While the Girl Ambassadors program is partially funded by the State Department through the American Alliance of Museums--we receive most of our support through fundraising .
