The diagnosis

Sue was diagnosed with  Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) in February 2019, after which she was forced to quit her job so she could focus on fighting for her life.  Unfortunately,  while her insurance is covering many of her medical expenses, Sue is left with day-to-day living expenses such as rent, food, phone, and fuel to get to and from her medical appointments, etc.

The follow-up

Following her diagnosis, Sue spent 2 months at the KU Medical Center. After her treatment was completed there, she was able to return home to Salina where she is receiving outpatient treatment at Tammy Walker Cancer Center as she waits on a cure. The only cure for AML is a bone marrow transplant, which involves receiving new stem cells from the bone marrow of a donor. None of Sue's family members are a match but luckily, 5 donors have been identified to be a 100% match, 3 of which are international donors.  Unfortunately, Sue has had several other medical issues arise that have held her back and kept her from being healthy enough for the transplant. In the meantime, as part of her ongoing treatment, Sue is required to frequently travel back and forth to the KU Medical Center in Kansas City.

What's happening now?

Currently, Sue is recovering from pneumonia and could easily relapse sending her back to the hospital. Once she is healthy enough and can have the  transplant, Sue will be required to stay in Kansas City for at least 100 days where she will require a 24/7 caregiver.  While her lodging will be free of charge, Sue will be responsible for food and other day-to-day expenses.

Community Service

Sue has spent countless hours selflessly serving her community, particularly those in need.  As a lifelong musician and singer, she believes deeply in the healing properties of music, especially for those with Alzheimer's Disease and similar illnesses.  Sue has used her gift of music to entertain, celebrate and comfort those around her.  For the last decade, she has played at senior centers, nursing homes, retirement homes, churches and community events.

Become  part of Sue's support community

It is our hope that through sharing Sue's story, her growing community will be inspired to provide encouragement, support, and prayers to her during her time of need as she has done for so many throughout the years. Please donate what you can.  Every contribution helps and is appreciated.
