Birgit's cancer care
Donation protected
As many of you know, Birgit had surgery on 1/31 for what was suspected as being a benign mass connected to her right ovary. According to her blood work and scans everything pointed to a invasive but yet relatively rudimentary surgery with a hospital stay of 2-5 days. Unfortunately, what the surgical team found when inside was a total shock to them and obviously to us, it was indeed a cancer.
She has a clear cell ovarian cancer that is fairly advanced, stage III of IV stages. According to the surgeon, the advanced stage before discovery is very common with ovarian cancer, but what is uncommon is her age, ovarian cancer is typically found in women over 60 years of age. But this is also an advantage in combating this.
After a week of recovery we then continue our journey down the path of chemotherapy, the current plan is 9 weeks of therapy, three treatments, and following that another potential surgery to remove some other areas in her abdomen.
Even though this cancer is aggressive, this may be a blessing in disguise, the Achilles heal of this cancer is it's faster growth which allows the chemotherapy to target those fast growing cells rather than normal cells. The good news is that this cancer is treatable!
It's with mixed feelings that I am setting up this Go Fund Me, I'm not sure how I feel about these types of campaigns. One one hand they are of great help to people but on the other hand I don't want to portray an image of benefit from our circumstance. It is my promise that any donations will be used to offset the medical costs associated with Birgit's cancer. If there is any surplus it will be donated to cancer research programs with great gratitude!
