Rock Hill man needs heart/double lung transplant

About 7 years ago, while working on his job as an exterminator, Richard Jenkins, 31 years old husband and father in Rock Hill SC, was bitten by a black widow spider. The poison from the bite went to his heart. As a result, Richard has had many serious health issues and has been close to death several times. He has been clinically dead at least twice. The damage from the poison as well as the repeated trauma from being on life support has severely damaged his heart and lungs. His doctors have informed him that his life-saving medication is no longer working. Although the dosages are being increased, his condition is worsening. He is currently taking twice the amount that patients with similar conditions are advised to take. Doctors feel his body is becoming immune to his medications. Specialists around Charlotte, NC are referring Richard to Duke Medical Center. He is in dire need of a heart and double lung transplant. His first appointment has been scheduled for February 21, 2014. This appointment will determine if his body can endure the major transplant surgery. Both the heart and both lungs have to be transplanted simultaneously. If only the lungs or the heart were done, then the remaining damaged organ would cause the transplanted organ to fail.

Richard has Medicare that will pay 80 percent of the cost. However, he is responsible for paying the remaining 20 percent. With a surgery estimated at around $2,000,000, 20 percent is about $400,000. After a successful transplant, the cost of the anti-rejection medications start at $20,000 monthly. Although he was initially turned down for Medicaid, Richard is reapplying in hopes of greater assistance. Even if he has both Medicare and Medicaid, there is the entire family's living expenses that must be provided for before, during, and after surgery. While Duke offers a scholarship to offset expenses, Richard is not sure he qualifies.

Richard and his wife Laura have two daughters, Chloe, 8, and Mckinley, 1. He is the son of Tiny Sauls. His prayer is to get the transplants so that he can be healthy again and see his beautiful daughters graduate and get married. He and his family appreciate all of your prayers. Thank you for taking your time to read this and keep him in your prayers. God bless you.

The transplant went successful but the last heart biopsy he took showed signs of rejection so now he is on a new medicine. Of all medicines that he will have to be on just the copays a year runs about $700.00 a month for the next year. Appreciate all of your donations but if you could pass this around a few more times maybe during this season of giving maybe someone will continue to donate to the cause any little thing helps thank you all again

Thank you for the continued prayers and support from everyone. Richard almost had his transplant this weekend. He we to the hospital and was there for 12 hours. The doctors said the donor heart and lungs were not healthy enough though. Hopefully next time will be a go. Richard and his family are still in need of your prayers and support. If you can please make a donation to help this family also, thanks in advance.

Richard has been at Duke for awhile now. He is graduating from pulmonary rehab today. Which brings some good news, he can now be put on the list for his organs. His Transplant Coordinator is Hoping to get him put on the list by the end of next week. Praying he does get organs soon and everything foes well and he has a fast recovery. Richard and Laura can't wait to get home to their 2 little girls. Thanks for taking the time to read their story. If you could please make a donation to help their family get through this very rough patch of road it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

Richard will be moving to Durham, NC to be close to Duke Hospital on June 1st 2014. Once there he can be put on the list for the double lung and heart transplant. Not sure how long it will take to actually get the organs he needs though. Please say some prayers for him and his family. This is a long, serious major operation. We are all praying everything goes as planned and he comes home soon. Please make donations if you can, he is still short some of the $25,000 goal set by Duke to move there. They are letting him come now though because he is only $7,000 away from that goal and this is a urgent health issue that needs to be addressed as soon as possible. Also he is still responsible for the 20% which is $200,000.00 that his medicare does not cover. Thanks for all the continued prayers and support for everyone.
