Ben Herring's Recovery

On January 11th Ben and his family’s life was changed forever. While driving to work in the early morning light a car swerved into his lane while trying to pass another vehicle and collided head on with his small car. The impact forced a piece of his car's frame through his upper tibia and out his femur, trapping him in the crushed car. It took a team of rescue workers and the jaws of life to free him from the wreckage. 

He was quickly life flighted to the University of Utah Hospital in critical condition where he was medically sedated while they determined the damage. On top of the leg injuries a brain bleed was detected as well as back injuries. It took hours of surgery, but the skilled doctors were able to remove the metal from his body without amputating. While the surgery was able to save his leg it left up to 10 inches of his femur completely missing. He is now stable and recovering in the ICU. We are so grateful he left that day with his life, but the life he once knew will never be the same. The doctors say it will take many surgery’s including multiple bone grafts and it will be over a year before he will be able to walk again.  

 Going forward his family needs to remodel their very small house to make it wheelchair accessible, pay for expensive medical procedures and continued physical therapy. Ben is a loving, generous father who would do anything for his family and the people he loves. The journey to recovery will be long and trying, so any donations received are appreciated in helping this great man and his family make it through this incredibly trying time.
