The Massachusetts Midwives Alliance (MMA) is a professional trade organization promoting the modern midwifery model which uses evidence-based and family centered practices to provide safe and fulfilling prenatal, birth and postpartum care to families across Massachusetts. A donation to MMA supports both our efforts to pass legislation that would create licensing for Certified Professional Midwives in Massachusetts, and also the MMA Midwifery Course scholarship fund for women of color and for financial need to help meet the growing demand for midwives who are able to serve diverse communities.

(Note: this page was set up by homebirth mama Sarah Whedon, but funds will be transferred directly from GoFundMe to MMA and not go to her at all)

Home birth is in the news today! WBUR's Commonhealth blog reports that home birth is on the rise but, "that even with the slight uptick in home births "” and the CDC's assessment of a lower risk profile among non-hospital births "” the controversy surrounding the practice remains as potent as ever" http://commonhealth.wbur.org/2014/03/new-home-birth-data-numbers-rise-a-bit-controversy-remains-unchanged

CommonHealth also published an opinion piece in December from Sarah Whedon, the Somerville mom who's operating this GoFundMe page in collaboration with MMA: "In a recent survey of new mothers, more than a quarter said they would consider home birth in the future and two-thirds thought home birth should be a right. Shouldn't Massachusetts be protecting that right to choose home birth?" http://commonhealth.wbur.org/2013/12/opinion-license-midwives-birth-options

My first born was born in a birth center, supported by wonderful midwives and doulas. My second child was born at home and it was the most beautiful, amazing experience ever. I am happy to support the MMA and hope that we see increasingly more home births and that we get the regulation we desire to make it an attainable option to even more families. I truly believe it is a safe and peaceful option that benefits baby, mother AND father (and in my case, big brother, too.) Thank you Jessica Petrone and Sarafina Kennedy for all your support.

My two girls were born at home, attended by fantastic CPMs. I hope this bill helps more families to access this wonderful and healthy way to birth, while ensuring safety and quality of care.
