Having an electric wheelchair or scooter would change my life. I can not tell you how much this means to me. I have a rare illness called Paraneoplastic neurological syndrome caused by cancer in the body. Oh and I have lupus and vasculitis too! If you would like to read my story carry on. So it's a long one? Are you ready? I'm a 30 year old mummy of two beautiful girls aged 8 and 2, married to my wonderful husband. When I was 25 I was diagnosed with lupus and vasculitis, it hit us hard and changed my life forever. I received chemo to supress my immune system. I carried on working and we kept a pretty normal life despite the challenges this brought. However in December 2017 I started to lose my hearing. Over the space of a few months i was profoundly deaf. This was a huge change in my life. I was a working mum who dealt with people face to face every day. My family and I are still trying to learn to sign but I'm not good at lip reading. I'm getting better at it though. Ive had lots of injections and tests since and the hearing loss was put down to vasculitis and the fact i had a benign tumour removed from my sinus. I started to feel really unwell again in February 2018, tests were inconclusive and this was put down to Lupus and vasculitis flare. I received chemo again but it did not have the expected result this time. July 10th 2018 I started having seizures. I was in ICU for 3 days and in a hospital ward for two weeks. This is when they discovered I have an Anti body called Anti HU. From what we can gather this Anti body is produced by the immune system in respone to a maligment cancer. So yes I have cancer. Right now the tumour is still to small to be detected and i have regular MRI & CT scans to search for it, but because of my underlying autoimmune diseases it is causing chaos in my body. My immune system is trying to fight the cancer but instead is attacking me again and will not stop or even respond to the usual treatments until the cancer is located and dealt with. Because of this I am losing the ability to function properly. Ive lost my hearing, have recurring siezures that cannot currently be controlled with medication. I suffer with memory loss and my balance is so bad to the point I can hardly stand or walk. I fall over all the time and struggle to even walk around the house. A simple task like making a coffee takes ages and usually results in a mess or broken cups. I have been told by my Neurologist I have Ataxia which affects balance, coordination, speech, my ability to swallow etc. Since July I rarely leave the house. I have no social life anymore and as a family we cannot do simple things together like walk to the park with our kids or go in to town. A form of powered transport would enable me to get out of the house on my own, take the kids to school by myself and to enjoy family days out.
