Dearest friends and family, there is no way to sugar coat this and make it easier to take. On Sunday the 6th of January, at around 5:30pm, our close friend and sister, Thelma, experienced a tremendous trauma. Ever the die hard Chargers fan, that weekend’s nail-biter of a game must’ve set her blood a racing because after a short nap, Thelma experienced an Aortic Dissection- essentially a tear in the inner layer of the large blood vessel branching off the heart. It’s a rare case, less than 200,000 cases per year. She said, she coughed and felt something snap inside of her, and quickly afterwards started losing sensation of her lower body. Late in the night of that Sunday she underwent a long 10 hour surgery to try to fix her heart. The surgery was successful to seal the dissection. But the entire event has had many repercussions that Thel is still fighting through. Her lower extremities are still not back to normal. She feels some sensation in her legs but is still unable to move them. The doctors have found a pulse on the right leg, but the left leg has not progressed as quickly as the other. Unless it improves sufficiently, there might be a need for Thelma to lose it. Thelma is mending and healing. She is very lucky in many ways. Which leads us to this: The family wants you all to know that although coming around and visiting is what you would want to do, please refrain from visiting. They are touched and humbled beyond words that they have such close knit and loving friends and family, but with all the activity and the dialysis, and plasma transfusions happening to her on the daily at the ICU, it would not be very wise to visit. Instead of flowers and gifts that they are unable to accept, please consider giving monetary donations to this fund to help contribute to the large pending expenses such a life-changing episode will entail. Thel and Rick have a beautiful family with 5 amazing kids. She has had her job for 21 years and since she is the major breadwinner, not being able to work has put a big strain and huge burden to keep up on expenses, much more- a looming hospital bill. Contributing to the fund will help ease the worry of a financial bind. Any donation, big or small, will be greatly appreciated and will help offset bills and living expenses and also towards getting an appropriate medically equipped vehicle big enough for the family to commute with. Thelma has always been known for having a big, loving heart. She would never hesitate to give some TLC to anyone who needs it. It is now our chance to give her some tender loving care back. I took life for granted when I was diagnosed with CHF (congestive heart failure in 2017. And then I stopped taking meds because of side effects. But HE didn't allow me to give up on life so easily. Neither did all my Angels that saved me when the last thing I remembered the ER Doc tell me that I was dying. It was so hard to see the pain in my children’s faces when I was told I was dying It was blunt, but I appreciate the doctor’s honesty. A special thanks goes out to my loved ones for being there for me as I recover- especially my husband, Rick, all my beloved children, and my family. Their compassion and unwavering loyalty to make arrangements to make sure someone is with me on the daily 24/7. That level of devotion warms and comforts me beyond words.
