Ollie’s Liver Shunt Surgery

Ollie is a one year old Jack Russel/Chihuahua mix that we welcomed into our family as a little puppy. Shortly after getting him we realized he was sick. We discovered he was born with a liver shunt. A liver shunt is basically where the blood vessels in the abdomen develop abnormally and instead of funneling blood from the intestines through the liver, the blood is able to bypass the liver and enters the systemic circulation. This abnormal blood flow prevents the liver from doing its job of processing the blood – eliminating medications, waste products, and toxins, breaking down nutrients from food, and regulating the body’s energy balance. We maintained it with a diet for a while but his little body is getting tired of fighting. Over the past few weeks he’s had several seizures, and spent the night at the hospital to receive fluids. He’s not doing well and needs surgery in order to fix his liver shunt. It’s by no means easy financially. If you have a pet you know the love and relationship you build with them. He brings so much happiness into our home and we could not imagine this life without him. He’s so special and full of life, anyone who meets him loves him just as much. If you know me you know I am never one to ask for money, but this is extremely important to me and has to be done in order to keep ollie with us. He is a blessing I never even knew I needed, but I sure do! He’s my best friend and holds a huge piece of my heart.
