Boston Bound! Marathon #1

Dear Friends & Family,

I have never run a marathon. I grew up playing basketball, football and lacrosse, all of which required running - a downside to competing in the sports I loved.  This perspective on running began to change during the Summer of 2011. I decided to start running, not as a punishment, but for actual fun. Soon after, I met Melissa during that same summer.

Melissa, on the other hand, had 8 marathons under her feet when we met.  A track star throughout most of her life, she convinced me to up my mileage resulting in me running 3 half marathons between March and October of 2013. This was a real accomplishment and I thought, "Cool, I'm a half marathoner!"

In April 2013, Melissa competed in and finished her 10th marathon in Boston, our favorite city, while I stayed and worked in Chapel Hill. I was able to track her progress throughout the day via an app on my phone until she finished at the 3:37 mark.  Just 30 minutes later, all chaos ensued and Melissa's marathon memories were altered forever: our city was under siege, Melissa was at ground zero in Marathon Sports (the store so dear to her and an actual lifesaver on that day) and I was miles away helplessly watching the events unfold from a work computer.  After vowing to spend our lives together in July 2013, I vowed to be there in Boston when Melissa ran marathon #11 in our favorite city.

After hearing our story, the Boston Police Running Club granted me membership and I was able to obtain a 2014 Boston Marathon running entry with a donation to Cops for Kids with Cancer Foundation (501c3 #75-3240064).  This is where I need your help!

I'm hoping to raise another $1000 to help fund lupus research. Lupus is close to the heart.  After being diagnosed at birth, my mom continues to struggle with the disease as does Melissa's aunt. Being in Boston with Melissa while also giving back by helping out 2 such awesome charities - all while running the longest distance of my life, seems appropriate.

Thanks for reading and helping me make this 2014 Boston Marathon dream a reality!

Love, kev

Words cannot describe the love and gratitude we have for such amazing friends and family! We cannot believe it; not only did y'all help to meet the goal of $2000.00, but we actually exceeded it. For those that couldn't contribute with a donation, your words of love and encouragement have fueled the training and helped keep us working toward reaching this now very near day. Our cup hath spilleth over with your generosity and support and we are so grateful to be able to run on behalf of two such worthy causes as lupus awareness/research and helping to fight cancer in children. News from the Road: The taper continues. Ran a half-marathon, or 13.1 miles, this morning. Big-ups to my wonderful wife, Melissa, for riding her bike alongside me to keep me company. Her knee is still bothering her, but if there is a person in this world capable and determined to run Boston this year, it's her! I'm just $289.00 short of my goal with two weeks to go...Much love!!!

News from the Road: After tapering off last weekend with a 13 mile run, 22 miles this morning felt great! This was the pinnacle of my training and I met my goal with a 3:26 time. Big ups to Tom Hardiman & Patrick Dillon who joined me for the middle 11.5. Just 5 weeks until Boston and I'm in taper mode - I can do this!
