On November 8th 2018 the Durfee family were forced to evacuate the town of Paradise due to the Camp Fire, which has now become the most destructive fire in California state history. Dawn, her husband Dave, their two children, and pets were able to escape the path of the fire in their Airstream and make it to Chico where they've hunkered down awaiting news about their home and neighborhood. They received news that their home was destroyed in the fire.

It will be some time before insurance support is clear and FEMA has not yet setup shop or established support. Even when insurance or federal/state support is available, it will likely not cover all of their needs. Despite everything, the Durfees are grateful for where they are today. In Dawn's own words, written just a day after they were evacuated:

“In spite of the last 24 hours, I woke up this morning in my camper overwhelmed with gratitude. I am so happy to be alive and to have been able to save my pets and find my children safe. I am so thankful for Cal Fire who has risked their lives all year trying to save our NorCal homes. But I am most thankful for the overwhelming support of my family, friends and coworkers. Thank you all for your messages and concern... I just want you to know that your communications have meant the world to me and I appreciate you so much. I hope that our experience encourages all of you to get disaster prepared."

Please consider a donation in any amount to help the Durfee family during this trying time. Sharing this campaign to spread the word will also help.

Thank you for any help you can provide!

All:

Thanks so much for your support of Dawn, Dave, Lauren, and Jake. (Plus dogs Belle and Annie B and kitten Star.) Three weeks after their evacuation, the family is still living in their Airstream. They are parked outside a friend's house, so they are able to eat meals and use the bathroom in the house. Air quality is improving following the recent rain, although you can hear the smoke in Dawn's voice when she speaks (and she says everyone around there has a raw throat).

Dave went back to work this past Monday and the schools in Chico will reopen this coming Monday, so the kids will get back into a normal routine. Dawn is focused on finding a home to rent. The rental market in Chico has always been tight due to all the students at Chico State, so it's a lot of work to find something. She indicated that the GoFundMe campaign has been a huge relief as it ensures ready cash for deposit and necessities when they find a place.

While there are photos of their property that show the house is gone, insurance will not start a claim process until she can walk the property physically with an agent of the insurance company. Authorities are not allowing residents back to her evacuation zone yet, so she is still waiting to be able to get back and get the ball rolling with insurance. You can see the before and after photos of the house's living room and fireplace included with this update.

Dawn enrolled with FEMA to ensure she could get whatever help might become available but got a "Declined" response without an explanation. She then stood in a blocks-long line yesterday that she described as comparable to a 1978 Star Wars ticket line. (Keeping the sense of humor!)

Hopefully, you have kept the Durfees in mind over the Thanksgiving break. If you have contributed to the GoFundMe, THANK YOU! If you have not yet contributed, please consider helping Dawn and her family - any amount can go a long way for them. And please help us drive awareness of the Durfee's situation by sharing and posting this campaign on your social media so others can help.

One final note: in an incident unrelated to the fire, Dawn lost all her phone contacts. So many friends have reached out since the fire that she's rebuilt much of her contact list, but if you would like Dawn to have your contact info, please email us at dawnsupport@claritasrx.com with your information - we will pull together all the contacts we receive and help her upload them to her contact list.
