Monteverde Institute Emergency Prep.

A year ago Tropical Storm Nate washed out roads, destroyed homes, and isolated the Monteverde community for more than a week without electricity, water and food. The Monteverde Institute became an unofficial emergency center to provide information, give support, a place to get or to prepare a meal and more. With the roads to Monteverde blocked, gasoline, food, etc couldn't reach the community. Now the community has asked us to be an official emergency center and we have agreed.
We have already purchased many of the supplies needed, but to be a truly supportive emergency center we need some help. Lack of electricity was a problem. Even after cell towers worked there was no power to charge phones and other devices, so communication remained difficult. As we have considered the situation we have decided to fit this need into our goal as an institution to be carbon neutral while assisting the community.
Our goal is to raise $$24,000 and we can do a lot with that money.
Consistent with our goal to be carbon neutral, we will first install a solar panel system that will meet the majority tof the electricity needs of the Institute both ongoing and during an emergency.
Additionally, we will purchase a gasoline generator as backup power during the actual emergency when cloudcover may prevent solar power generation.
The local emergency team will provide us with beds and blankets and we have designated areas that can be used for sleeping, but we need and will create a secure place to store this equipment in readiness for an emergency.
Finally, we will purchase an electric powered vehicle to use daily as well as for emergency short range transport of people and supplies.
