The Vagina Monologues-योनिका कथाहरु

February is V-Season!
And V stands for Violence, Victory and of course, Vagina.

Who are we?

'Madalenas Nepal' is a Kathmandu-based women's theater group with 13 members linked to Madalenas International and the movement of Theatre of the Oppressed.

We perform in- and outside of regular theatres to advocate for women's rights and the end of violence against women. As founder and Creative Director of Madalenas International Barbara Santos puts it:  "Madalena is a magic mirror and a creative common space where every woman can recognise herself in another one, a process that transformed us through a playful, poetic, emotional and intense experience where we really felt together. The discoveries were many. The historical ownership and the exploration of the female body for production and re-production at a time when our capitalistic and patriarchal society brutally came to life. ... How many times do we give up what we want? How many times we reproduce habits that we are not part of us anymore?"

What are we going to do?

We followed this years’ calling and are engaging in 20 vagina-workshops resulting in the production of ‘The Vagina Monologues 2016 - योनीका कथाहरू’. These monologues represent a collection of female voices and experiences gathered by play-wright Eve Ensler in the course of interviewing more than 200 women about their views on sex, relationships and violence against women.

The performance will be staged in Nepali and English from 12.-14.02.2016 at 5.15 pm at Mandala Theatre-Nepal in Anamnagar, Kathmandu.

Why are we going to do that?

Talking about sex or showing any form of intimacy in public is almost unthinkable in Nepal. This repression of an essential part of human life and experience often leads to ignorance towards our own body, as well as to increased risks of experiencing any forms of sexual violence.

Staging 'The Vagina Monologues' in Nepal therefore is a revolutionary and transformative act, which shall challenge society to re-consider its boundaries and limitations, as well as encourage women to speak out and stand up for ourselves.

'The Vagina Monologues' are not only a production, but an essential process which encourages women to engage with their own body, sexuality, joyful as well as violent experiences. It is a deeply transformative and empowering process for us as actresses, which will also be reflected in the three shows, we will stage.

What will we use the money for?

'Madalenas Nepal' operates solely on volunteer-basis and currently we are funding all our expenses from our own pockets. However, our personal resources are limited, stretched and generating funds will support us in preparing a high quality show by giving us a real budget for production- and workshop-costs.
They will cover basic expenses, such as the hall rent, technical equipment, set and costumes, as well as workshop-material.

Should there be any profit from ticket-sale, we vow to donate it to an identified organization working on supporting women's living situation in Nepal.

Be our guests!

Come and meet hajurama telling us about her lovers and secret dreams; meet a participant of a vagina-workshop; listen to the suffering of a boy who wanted to be a girl and of a survivor of rape throughout the Bosnian war. We hope – and we invite you – to laugh, cry and feel empowered with us!
