6 North of 60 Arctic Expedition
On June 14th the 6NORTHOF60 crew will have the privilege of going on an amazing adventure to the Arctic! Emily Spangler, Marissa Sieck, Sammi Armacost, Lindsay Wiebold, Maddie Stoehr, and Meredith Freshley will be canoeing from the Mackenzie Mountains in Canada’s Northwest Territories, to Nunavut’s Coronation Gulf on the Arctic Ocean.
We are 6 women, north of the 60th parallel. This will be a 60-day trip, stretching about 750 miles through rivers, lakes and across the Arctic tundra.

We have a few different, but complimentary, goals for this trip:
- We are aiming to tangibly empower women and young girls to pursue the outdoors, and inspire confidence to strive for epic, endurance trips. We feel strongly that young girls require strong, capable, humble, and empowered role-models. We hope that through our trip we can demonstrate these qualities, and highlight the unique leadership styles of women.
- In addition to providing examples of empowered women seeking the outdoors, we are also raising money to support young women in having access to their own outdoor experiences. On top of raising money for the trip itself, we are raising money in aid of the LDAC (Leadership Development and Advanced Canoeing) program for girls aged 14-18 at the wilderness-tripping and community based camp, Ogichi Daa Kwe. We have experienced first-hand the incredible impact this program can have on the confidence, strength and spirit of teenage girls. We are hoping the funds we raise in its support will allow more girls to participate and will enhance the opportunities for the program’s development.
- Third, integral to the two above points, we want to share our love and respect for the outdoors. We are aiming to bring attention to a rapidly changing area of the world. We all feel strongly about environmental awareness and preservation, and would like to highlight the beauty and fragility of the Arctic, hopefully spurring others on to take action for its protection.
We can’t wait to go on this epic adventure, paddling endlessly through some of the world’s most incredible landscapes, hopefully empowering others to do the same!
In order to make this a reality for me and the team, we really need support! While we have applied for grants and recieved many sponsorships as well, it’s imperative we get support from our friends and family! As you can imagine the trip has been costly, from plane tickets, to food, to gear, we have a few more big expenses before we leave. We have created this page to pool support from my family and friends, and then feed it back into the trip costs and to the LDAC program.
Support can come in many forms: words of encouragement, advice, spreading the word...not just money. We'd really appreciate ALL types of support for our trip!
