Pandora’s Fund

Pandora is just under a year old, and she was discarded by her breeder because she was not profitable as a riding horse or a broodmare. She is a purebred QH with grandparents Smart Little Lena, Down Home Dash and What A Bayou, so she is very well bred but with her legs as they were, she couldn’t carry a foal. Pandora was purchased at auction. We outbid the meat man, knowing full well that Pandora had issues with her legs that would make the trailer ride to Quebec slaughter plant a living hell for her, packed in with other horses on legs that could barely hold her up, she likely would’ve gone down and been trampled. So, we took her in hopes that even if we couldn’t find her a home, we could give her a kinder ending. We have been shocked how well Dora has done in the foster care of Sandra, our feed rep and friend who takes on a lot of our ‘difficult cases’. With the right feed and care, her legs have straightened up tremendously and she’s now able to gallop around like a baby should. However, she still will likely develop arthritis in the joints as she grows and if those knees aren’t strengthened, she will have trouble holding herself up as she gains weight and grows into a chunky Quarter Horse. So we’d like to get the vet out for another opinion and some x-rays (as well as a fecal and five day wormer), now that her legs are better than when she arrived. Should the vet say there is anything we can do, such as bracing or surgery, we’d like to be able to do that for her. There is of course the chance that the vet will say there’s nothing we can do for her, had the breeders done something when she was younger she would’ve had a much better chance. In that case the money will go into the rescue account to help the next horse we save and we will continue working to find Dora a loving home. If anyone is able to give even a little bit, it’ll help us do everything we can for sweet Dora. She is just a lovely filly and deserves the best quality of life she can get. ♥️
