As soon as I moved to the UK, I joined Arun Youth Aqua Center, which provided me with the opportunity to make friends and get involved with the community, something which is essential to a 14-year-old who knows no one. As Kurt Haun believed, I have personally experienced the bonds of friendship which are created in stressful moments while sailing. Through sailing I have become more confident and aware of my capabilities as an individual and as a teacher.
Through my participation in this sailing center, I have now become a certified RYA Dinghy Instructor and for the last two years I’ve volunteered at AYAC, teaching children as young as age 6 to sail. Teaching sailing to help other youths discover how capable they are, is a fulfilling feeling.
I wish to now broaden my knowledge of sailing from small dinghies to bigger ships, such as The Excelsior, which will allow me to work towards Competent Crew and eventually gain my RYA Yachtmasters, a qualification which would provide many more exciting teaching and travelling opportunities and allow me to pursue my newly found passion for Tall ships.
The Excelsior Tall Ship is an authentic and beautifully restored, seventy-seven-foot-long fishing smack. She was built in 1921, and is listed among the UK’s most important historic vessels. The Excelsior Trust in Lowestoft provides opportunities for youth to experience the challenge and adventure that sailing can provide, by using The Excelsior as a sail training ship.
I have recently spent an amazing three weeks as one of five crew members on The Excelsior, sailing from Lowestoft to Holland and around UK with young passengers. Life on the Excelsior was many things, exhausting, invigorating, and most definitely challenging. I have never worked so hard or been so tired and dirty in all my life. The other four crew members were experienced Excelsior sailors and I did my best to pull my own weight; to learn as much and as fast as possible and to make myself useful. Daily I was covered in tallow and goose fat, from lubricating the traditional rigging. The three weeks I spent on the Excelsior were amazing, exciting, and physically and emotionally challenging. I faced frightening conditions at sea, stormy weather in a force 10. My life has been forever enhanced in these three weeks from my experiences and I’m a better person for it.
I hope to experience many challenges during my gap year that will help further develop my strengths and help clarify my path for the future. From September 3rd to September 16th, I would like to sail on the Excelsior from Lowestoft, England, to Denmark to participate in the Limfjorden Rundt; a regatta and festival for classical ships, and I am seeking financial help so I may participate in this fantastic experience. This coming trip would offer unquantifiable experience which would be beneficial in enhancing my communication skills and continued by working and living with people from all walks of life.
Sailing has provided me with countless opportunities, from allowing me the chance to gain numerous qualifications, to a job teaching sailing in Costa Rica, which will commence in November.
I hope to be able to help others have the same opportunities that I have had, however I must become confident in my own abilities and knowledge before I can help others in the same way that I have been helped. Therefore, by helping me go on this trip, you would not be just providing funding, you are helping me to give others the same opportunities that I have had.
This voyage will cost nine-hundred pounds, not including travel. I will be working and saving as much as I can to help finance it but I’m afraid I will earn only a third of the cost. I am seeking financial help because without it, this fantastic opportunity would not be possible. I thank you for your time and consideration.
