Meet Ghost, the original therapy horse and queen mare at Barnabas Horse Foundation in Myrtle Beach, SC. She lovingly helps women, children, veterans, and families that have experienced physical and emotional trauma to find healing and wholeness again. In the 6 years Ghost has been a therapy horse, she has helped hundreds of humans find peace, acceptance, and love with her inquisitive and charming personality. You see she doesn't just allow humans to be in her presence - she embraces them in a horse hug, wrapping her head and neck around the hurting, and holds them close. We always say that you don't choose Ghost, she chooses you. This big Quarter Horse girl has a heart for those who have suffered the most horrific of events and makes it her mission to love them back to wellness.
Now she needs our help - mine and yours. Ghost was diagnosed with navicular syndrome two years ago - a degenerative bone disease of the hoof- brought on by her big, beautiful Quarter Horse confirmation. After having tendon surgery in November, her "bad" foot was doing better, but the "good" foot began having trouble due to supporting most of Ghost's weight (horses carry 70% of their body weight on their front legs). This has caused her coffin bone to begin rotating and she needs emergency surgery to survive. This surgery comes at a great cost (well over $5000), but due to the generosity and compassion of her veterinary rehabilitation team, the surgery will be performed for $5000.
Why would we go through all of this? Why would we put her through another surgery? That answer lies within Ghost herself. Her desire to live and thrive and love and heal is like nothing we have ever witnessed. She's not ready to call it quits, so we will fight beside her and for her. Our philosophy at Barnabas is there are no "throw-away" people and no "throw-away" horses. The Barnabas tag line is "Horses Helping Humans Heal."
