Help Get Lola and Sarah to Montreal

Bonjour, je m’appelle Léa Ledoux. Je suis une activiste LGBTQI qui habite à Montréal et qui est très impliquée dans la communauté en faisant du bénévolat pour différents organismes communautaires.
J’ai voyagé au Kenya pour la 1ère fois au mois d’avril de cette année. Là-bas, j’ai rencontré deux femmes activistes, Lola et Sarah avec qui je suis devenue amie (qui ont été renommées pour des raisons de sécurité). Bon nombre d’entre vous le savent peut-être ou pas, mais l’homosexualité au Kenya est condamnée de 14 ans de prison.
Pendant plus de 10 ans, Lola a travaillé dans la recherche comportementale et biomédicale au Kenya et en Somalie. Depuis 2005, elle a été directement impliquée dans la prévention du VIH, son développement économique, et dans la protection légale au Kenya de la communauté Lesbienne, Gay, Bisexuel.le et Trans (LGBT). Son travail auprès de la communauté LGBT a commencé avec ses premières actions sur la prévention et le dépistage du VIH. De là, elle s’est découvert une passion pour traiter les besoins insatisfaits de son pays lorsque ça touche l’éducation et la prévention du virus.
Depuis 2007, Sarah a été parmi une des principales chefs activistes. Pendant toutes ces années, elle a travaillé avec la communauté minoritaire des femmes en créant des projets et des initiatives terrains. Elle habite actuellement en région où elle a créé un groupe de lesbiennes qui s’appelle Été pluvieux. Ses principaux champs d’action tournent autour de la religion liée à la diversité sexuelle et à son expression. Elle coordonne les adventistes du 7ème jours Kenyan qui défendent les droits LGBT.
Les 2 femmes citées ci-dessus sont riches d’idées et d’une expérience qu’elles espèrent pouvoir partager avec la population Montréalaise. Je crois fermement qu’à travers un projet d’échange culturel, elles auront un gros impact auprès des organismes communautaires LGBTQI+ de Montréal et de sa population.
De plus, aucune de ces deux femmes n’a jamais vécu l’expérience d’une fierté et d’un défilé. Nous prenons souvent pour acquis la liberté d’être ouvertement qui nous sommes en public. Une fierté est un temps de visibilité, de communauté et d’activités. J’ai vraiment à cœur de les inclure dans notre célébration cette année.
C’est la raison pour laquelle j’ai commencé ce projet qui a pour objectif de financer leur voyage à Montréal, Canada, pour le festival de fierté de cette année 2018. Cela inclus le financement pour 2 visas, 2 billets d’avion et un peu pour vivre à Montréal ( 2 cartes OPUS, nourritures pour 2). Tous dons versés seront retirés en mon nom afin de leur envoyer un transfert international des sommes amassées.
Tout fond supplémentaire obtenu sera donné au comité de la Fierté Ouest du Kenya, un nouveau groupe qui a avec bravoure commencé le travail d’organisation de leur 1ère fierté au Kenya. Lola et Sarah font parties de ce comité et travaillent sans relâche pour voir leur objectif se réaliser.
J’ai la ferme conviction qu’il est important pour des personnes vivant à l’étranger d’avoir la chance de pouvoir vivre le progrès de notre société lorsque cela touche la reconnaissance des droits et l’existence des personnes LGBTQI+ dans notre province. Alors que nous avons encore beaucoup de chemin à parcourir, nous avons aussi effectué beaucoup d’avancé dans nos droits.

Hi my name is Lea Ledoux. I am a LGBTQI activist who lives in Montreal and who is very involved in the community by volunteering for different non-profit organizations.
In April of this year, I travelled to Kenya for the first time. It is there that I met two female activists, Lola and Sarah which became friends (who have been renamed for security and safety purposes). As many of you may or may not know, homosexuality in Kenya can be penalized by up to 14 years in prison.
Lola has been working in behavioral and biomedical research in Kenya and Somalia for over 10 years, and has been directly involved with HIV prevention, economic development, and the legal protection of Kenya’s Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community since 2005. Her work with the LGBT community began with her early efforts with HIV counseling and testing, through which she developed a unique passion for handling the country’s unmet needs when it comes to dealing with and preventing new infections.
Sarah has been one of the lead activists since 2007, during which time, she worked with minority women in creating grassroots projects and initiatives. She currently live in a rural area where she has founded a lesbian group called Rainy summer. Her main advocacy work surrounds religion as it relates to sexual orientation and expression where she coordinates Seventh Day Adventist Kenya that advocates LGBT rights.
Both of the two women mentioned above have a wealth of ideas and experiences which they hope to be able to share with the Montreal population. I strongly believe that through a cultural exchange project, they will be able to make a deep impact on LGBTQI Montreal organizations and people.
Moreover, neither of these women have ever been able to experience a Pride festival or march. We often take for granted the freedom of being able to be who we are, in open and in public. Pride is a time of visibility, community, and activity. I aim to include them in our celebrations for this year.
This is why I have begun a project that aims to finance both women’s travels to Montreal, Canada, for this year’s 2018 Pride festival. This includes the financing for 2 visas, 2 planes tickets plus a bit for living in Montreal ( 2 local transportations, food for 2 people in Montreal). I will withdrawing the funds in my name in order to send them an international transfer of the donations.
All additional funds will be donated to the Western Kenya Pride committee, a new group that has bravely begun work on attempting a Pride in Kenya. Lola and Sarah are part of this committee, and work tirelessly to see this goal realized.
I strongly believe that it is important for people abroad to experience our society’s progress when it comes to recognizing the rights and existence of LGBTQI people here in our province. While we have far to go, we have also come so far as well.
