Help Gwyn Make (Better) Music!

Donation protected
Gwyneth hopes to attend the Philadelphia International Music Festival this June. Tuition is a huge stretch for us, so she is applying for scholarships and working extra hours babysitting and cutting patterns for an Etsy shop she is employed by.

Gwyn is a dedicated musician, practicing piano and voice several hours a day, all while maintaining a high GPA and being a general lynchpin in our family's day to day life. She is, as they say, good people.

Rather than go on about her myself, here are Gs thoughts on why she loves studying music - from her scholarship application.

Why I Love to Study Music

"Education in music is most sovereign because more than anything else rhythm and harmony find their way to the innermost soul and take strongest hold upon it” -Plato. Republic 3.401d.

I have been studying music since the age of six. What started out as a hobby became a passion, and, with diligence and hard work, will hopefully lead to a career as a musician. I love studying music because it enables me to express that which I cannot put into words, encourages discipline, and allows me to prove my dedication to things about which I am passionate.

Expressing one’s thoughts and feelings is sometimes difficult; music provides the perfect medium. Through phrasing and dynamics, I can convey emotion. Singing and playing the works of great composers allows me to better understand myself.

The cultivation of musical knowledge demands orderliness. While practicing, I need to be thoughtful. Rather than playing or singing a song repeatedly, I must practice the measures that require improvement. Discipline is gained from having to keep track of rehearsals and balance my schedule. I build expertise that benefits me as a musician, and in all of my endeavors.

Music is one of the few careers that should be chosen earlier in life if one hopes to be successful. Years of hard work and sounding terrible precede even the slightest chance of achievement in the musical world. Immense dedication and a genuine love of music are necessary to become a professional musician, which I hope to do.

To conclude, my education will be all the more thorough because of the time dedicated to music. I love to study music. The study of music allows expression, encourages discipline, and proves dedication.
