As the Poeta Family suffers the worst loss imaginable, they need the support of this wonderful, and large, community more than ever. Poeta Strong will continue to try to anticipate the needs of our dear friends and help them in any way possible.
Right now they need us to offer our love and prayers.
They also need our financial help. The expenses of the past year are great. We can ease this burden somewhat. Benefits are being held to offer assistance over the next few months. Please attend as many as you can. These are opportunities to join together and celebrate Nina's life and this wonderful family, while removing some of the added stress of these large expenses.
Next Friday, the 21st, A Benefit Dinner will be held at La Bella Vista at the Ponte Club. Individual tickets, as well as full tables of 10, are available. This will be a very special night for friends and family to gather. Please send a message here on gofundme or firstname.lastname@example.org for tickets. Many of you know my phone number!! Call me.
Thank you all for continuing on this journey with The Poeta Family and for being there for them throughout the past year. WE ARE POETA STRONG!!
It is with broken hearts that we share the news of Nina's passing. Nina was at home surrounded by her mom and dad and her sister, Cara. It was a calm and peaceful moment at 11pm on November 1st, All Saints 'Day. The Poeta family would like to thank you for your love and support during Nina's difficult journey. Their angel is now with the other angels in heaven.
Nina is home from the hospital. She is being cared for by Mom and Dad and Cara. A nurse is with the family, too.
A beautiful event took place at Nina's home Sunday when the Daughters of Charity, a group of sisters from Mother Teresa's Order, came to pray with her. A crowd of friends and family, close to 200 strong, surrounded the outside of the house and prayed while the sisters prayed inside.
Today is a another very special day for Nina. First Selectman, Kurt Miller, has proclaimed it , "Nina Poeta Day" in the town of Seymour, CT. He encourages Seymour residents to, "recognize Nina's strength and courage and to wear pink and grey as a symbol of their support of her fight."
I would like to extend this to all of Nina's supporters throughout the world. Please say an extra prayer for Nina today and wear pink and gray. Also, please share Nina's story with your friends and neighbors. Today, Nina Poeta Day,would be the perfect day to meet our goal of raising 100,000 dollars to help the family during this grave time.
Thank you all for your continued love, prayers, and support. The Poeta Family is remaining strong because of this amazing rally from around the country and beyond.
Thank you so much for all your support for Nina, John, Dorie and Cara. The outpouring of love, prayers and donations is amazing! The fund is looking fantastic, over 87,000 dollars! Yet, with both parents out of work and all the added expenses the family is facing, the money is going out steadily. The latest expenses include a handicap bathtub, rental of a wheelchair accessible van, and a computerized communication board. In order to keep up with the expenses, Poeta Strong would like to organize a major fundraiser. A Dinner Dance on Saturday, November 29th has been proposed. There are many other fundraisers coming up, including the Seymour High School Boys' soccer game on 10/10 and the SHS Girls' soccer game on 10/14, a Motorcycle Ride is planned for the 11th, ongoing shirt sales, and more. With all these events going on, we need as many volunteers as possible. If you are available for planning the Dance, please consider the following areas... Silent Auction, Ticket sales, Decorations, Publicity, Food, Printing, Venue, Sponsorship...For more information please visit www.facebook.com/PoetaStrong
Many of you may not know Nina had to be admitted today at Smilow. Her oxygen level is low and she may be dehydrated. Of course she does not take this time to slack off. She had her new computerized communication board brought to the hospital this afternoon and hopefully will be saying, "I love you" to mom and dad and Cara tonight. Thank you again for your continued support. God Bless You! #ninastrong
Right now Nina should be starting her senior year at Seymour High School and cheering for the football team as they begin their season. Though this is a very difficult time, Nina is not letting this break her spirit! She was determined to participate and made it to the home opener on Thursday night! With the help of Seymour EMS, the Seymour High School administration, the Board of Education and her Cheer Family, Nina was present on the field for this special game. The community came out in their Ninastrong T-shirts. Even fans of the opposing team, the Amity Spartans, showed their support by buying T-shirts and making donations.
In order for Nina to go to more games and on other outings, the family is going to rent a wheelchair accessible van. This is possible because of the amazing support you have all shown on this site. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!
A Community Prayer Gathering is planned for Nina on August 16th at 4:30pm at Saint Augustine’s Church, 35 Washington Ave, Seymour. A mass for Nina will be followed by prayers and refreshments. Cards will be available to send Nina in the hospital. Please join Poeta Strong and the community for this special event. Call 203-415-4387 for more information or visit:
Many people every day ask for an update on Nina.
She is working very hard throughout each day on physical, occupational, and speech therapy. Her doctors are looking into specialized inpatient settings where she can be even more aggressive with her therapy while getting the treatment she needs. She is receiving chemotherapy every two weeks and remains as sweet as ever. She shows such gratitude to her Mom & Dad even when she is feeling pretty bad.
As Nina continues to battle courageously, the community is rallying around her to offer prayers and support. The family is homebound caring for Nina, so dinners are being delivered to their home, errands are being taken care of and donations are being made to help with expenses. Over the weekend a very special event was held in Nina's honor and the family would like me to thank all the supporters of the Picnic and Silent Auction to Benefit Nina!! With the help of the individuals and businesses who donated Auction Items and everyone who attended, Poeta Strong raised NINE THOUSAND DOLLARS to help Nina and her family. Unfortunately, Nina was not well enough to attend this wonderful event, but the texts, pictures, and phone calls to the family from the picnic really brightened the family's day. When Nina heard how many people came to support her and how successful the Silent Auction was, she was beaming!! The Tarby family generously offered their venue, Colonial Tavern, at no charge and provided a wonderful day filled with food and music. The SHS Fathers' Club was on hand all day to help make sure everything went smoothly; Peggy Esposito coordinated a fantastic Silent Auction; and Poeta Strong volunteers pulled the whole event together beautifully. Mike Lynch graciously led the group in prayer for Nina.
On the horizon: Poeta Strong would like to plan an evening of prayer, a chance for the community to come together and offer prayers for Nina's return to health. Please watch Poeta Strong's facebook page for details. https://www.facebook.com/PoetaStrong
The past eight months have been quite challenging for Nina and her family. She has undergone radiation, two very delicate surgical procedures, and is currently receiving a second round of chemotherapy. At this time, Nina is struggling with several neurological complications. She is having vision problems and reduced use of her left side.
The community’s love and support has been and continues to be a blessing to the Poeta family and we would love to have the community's presence at an upcoming major event for Nina.
A special day is planned for Nina and her family on July 26th. Poeta Strong and Colonial Tavern in Oxford are hosting a Picnic and Silent Auction. We are hoping to have a great turnout to show Nina that she is not alone in this fight. This will be a great way to spend time with the Poeta's and show your love and support. Tickets are available at Peachwave in Oxford & Special Discount Liquor, Phoenix Yoga & Wellness Center and Peak Fitness, all in Seymour. Visit the Picnic facebook page or call Elizabeth Pisano at 203-415-4387 for more information or to donate a prize for the auction. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Picnic-and-Silent-Auction-to-Benefit-The-Poeta-Family-July-26-2014-at-Noon/589003491215135?focus_composer=true&ref_type=bookmark
Please keep Nina in your prayers during this difficult battle. It has been very tough for her in the past month. The treatment she had was quite invasive and she is still having complications. She is struggling with weakness on her left side and some visual problems.
Thankfully, Nina and her family were able to take a trip to Italy granted by the Make a Wish Foundation. A pink wheelchair kept Nina on the move during this amazing vacation (a purchase made possible from the generosity of the supporters of The Poeta Family Fund). Another way the donations have helped in this fight include the countless expensive trips to Boston and New York for treatment. Thank You All!!
Nina will be starting a second course of chemotherapy next week. She will start at Memorial Sloane Kettering and continue at Yale. It will be much easier on the family to go to New Haven for the treatments.

Sixteen year old Nina Poeta is a cheerleader for Seymour High
School and a talented gymnast and was having trouble with headaches while
performing her routines. On Tuesday,
November 19, 2013, she received an MRI of her brain because of these headaches. The
next day her family was told to bring Nina to Smilow Cancer Center at Yale New
Haven Hospital where she was diagnosed with a mass on her brain. They were told
the cancerous tumor Is located in her brain stem and can't be surgically
removed. Nina was immediately fitted for a radiation mask and will begin
radiation therapy on Monday, November 25th. She will be treated with radiation five days
a week for a total of 30 visits at Smilow. The oncology team hopes this will
shrink the tumor. This is not a cure and the mass may grow larger at any point
in the future. Chemotherapy may be required, as well, depending on the outcome
of the radiation.
This will be a very hard fight and so many people have asked how
they can help! We are organizing this site with hopes of helping raise money
for the Poeta family during this extremely difficult time. They will be looking
at time away from work, medical bills and challenges still unknown. Thank you
for your prayers, support and most of all love during this battle.
Dorie, John, Cara and, of course, precious Nina, will need as many thoughts,
prayers and support as possible. We will fight hard, we will offer support, and
we will be there to help Nina win this fight!
Please find it in your heart to donate and spread the word to as
many people as possible (email this out please!!). Cancer has affected
all of us in one way or another and we need to pull together and support this special
family and their beautiful 16 year old daughter on her road to recovery. I
appreciate that you have taken the time to read their story and even if a
monetary donation is not possible please say a prayer for Nina and the Poeta family.
