This is Alexander Aldridge. It is his third year on the team, and this year he is our team captain. This year he has been our lead programmer.
Alexander does a lot more than robotics. Next year he will be going to the university of Victoria on Vancouver Island to major in Computer Science. He does card tricks and illusions as a hobby, he has a black belt in karate and he’s done ballet since he was six.
He is in grade twelve at William Aberhart High School. This semester he has Calculus AP, Physics AP, Social Studies and Computer Science. His recent favorite lunchtime activity is the new Aberhart board game club, where he is a frequent plays games with his friends.
You can’t normally find him at the competition, because he runs all over the pit area. In Idaho he was the operator and controlled the intake on Ms DOS. In Calgary this year, he aided other teams, ran to and from the machine shop, and took on the role of technician in finals.
This will be his first time going to Worlds. He is extremely excited and is eager for the adventure.

For the next few updates, we would love for you all to 'meet a nomad'... and we will start with Shayna Labbe!

Shayna is a mentor who joined the Nomads in the 2016-2017 after being part of FIRST since 2001 when she was a student member of 1305 in North Bay, Ontario. That year, the second year of the team, they also won a spot to Worlds held in St. Louis. Shayna remembers the experience and the energy level at the fields that day, and while their robot, Magnus Digitus, did not perform as expected, the lessons learned and the shared experience of attending stays with her today. After graduating high school, Shayna continued to volunteer with FIRST at regional competitions in Waterloo and in Calgary.

She is excited to this year be attending Worlds again, this time as a Mentor and to watch the Students enjoy the experience, and have some fun along the way.

Shayna has taken on many different roles within 5630 throughout the 2 short seasons she has been here including driver extraordinaire for our trips to Idaho, Design/prototyping mentor, drive coach and a general jack of all trades. She likes to learn as much as she can from the students and believes if you haven't learned something today, you aren't paying attention!

You can often find her in the pits during a competition reminding the students that FIRST Robotics is NOT about the robot or the blue banner (for winning an award), but its instead about growing STEM in the community and growing and learning as a team.

Shayna works in Calgary, Alberta as an Advanced Care Paramedic and finishing her Human Sciences Degree with Athabasca Univesity.
