Lily Meade is a member of the YA community - she makes videos and writes and is a generally supportive, giving member of the community.
Lily and her family have been homeless for a while. A few community members have been paying for them to stay in a motel, but that's not a permanent fix. T's a possibility of housing in the new year, but the family's income is all from disability and some of that disability might be lost soon. On top of this, most of their things are in storage and they're falling behind on those payments, so they might soon lose those things as well. Plus, come February, Lily has to begin paying back her student loans for the college education she never got to finish.
They want to find work, but if they make too much income, then they risk losing their government aid - much of which will be up in the air as of January 20. Additionally, all of those who can work are disabled. From Lily: "My mother is a veteran and receives SSI, my brother has cognitive impairments and also receives SSI (though he'll likely lose it very soon if we can't find a lawyer to defend him at his reevaluation hearing next week). I have a genetic condition called Nuerofibromitosis that causes tumor growth and daily migraines that make it difficult for me to hold a typical job. I'm applying for Disability myself so I can get access to Medicare, but if I don't get it and lose my Obamacare coverage I'm in serious jeopardy. I've been to the hospital six times this year because of my condition."
This is obviously a really dire - and really complicated - situation. But we can help Lily and her family. I set $5,000 as a random goal, but they can use all the help they can get to keep their possessions, keep getting health care, find housing, and keep themselves fed.
