The Neff family has received devastating news and they need your help.

In January 2019, Scott Neff, 40, was diagnosed with ALS/Lou Gehrig’s Disease (think ALS Ice Bucket Challenge). It is a progressive neurological disease that weakens the muscles in the body and leads to total paralysis and then death. Upon diagnosis, the average remaining life expectancy is only 2-5 years. While each case progresses differently, there is a gradual onset of progressive muscle weakness throughout the body. This leads to difficulty speaking, swallowing, and using one’s hands, feet and other muscles.

Despite research from many foundations and medical facilities across the world, there continues to be no cure. The treatment of ALS focuses on providing supportive care in order to improve the quality of life and prolong survival, however, treatment and medication can only prolong life for a number of months. The disease is a grueling disease with no good outcome.

As you can imagine, this has forever changed the Neff family and the future for their two young daughters.  Since Scott’s diagnosis 6 months ago, his strength and motor skill function has steadily declined. He has lost a significant amount of muscle mass and weight. Scott can no longer physically work without help. His ability to do many daily activities such as opening bottles and packages, getting dressed, preparing food, and even lifting and carrying things have become more challenging. Scott has also begun to have trouble writing as well as issues with speech.

Scott can be described by his friends and family as a soft-spoken, loyal, proud family man. In order to provide for his family, Scott started his own tile business in 2013. Because of his hard work and dedication, Karla has been able to stay at home to raise their two young daughters: Ella, 5 and Evie, 4. Over the last few years, the family has enjoyed adventures and trips to new places, spending time with loved ones and specifically building Legos together (the girls’ favorite thing to do with their dad). Scott has been a rock to Karla and the girls. To think of a life without him is devastating. This diagnosis and illness is robbing them of the future that they had planned together as a family.

Although faced with the reality of this terminal diagnosis, Scott tries to remain mentally strong. He and Karla are trying to live their normal lives for as long as they can with their girls. They appreciate all of the support that they have already received from friends and family; however, they can’t help but worry about what the future will hold for their daughters.

The Neff family is asking for your help.  Scott’s estimated yearly medical expenses will be costly and he may eventually need in home care.  Scott and Karla are also worried about the long term financial impact of losing Scott, especially for the future of their daughters.  They ask that you would consider donating to the The Neff Fund. All funds will go toward proper medical care for Scott and to ensure that his family can spend as much time with him as possible while he suffers through the progression of this devastating disease.
