Baby Bat Creche

We have had the worst season on record with our Cairns CBD colony.911 orphaned or dead Spectacled flying fox pups have been found since September 15th and more coming in every day. With the birthing season expected to continue until the end of January, we will have enormous costs feeding these pups until they are released. Pups stay in our care at release enclosures where they strengthen their wings in preparation for release.It will be necessary to build additional release enclosures as well as feeding costs. 100 orphans were sent to Brisbane to help the 30 carers in Far North Queensland cope with our numbers. Those pups will be returned for creche. Average costs of orphans at creche is $50 per pup, with 400 found alive costs could exceed $20 000 which carers who are unpaid volunteers cover.Costs come from the carers pockets and many have had to adjust their work to accomodate the feeding schedules and treatment from injuries.
