--- ESPAÑOL ABAJO ----

We're reaching out as Ayni Institute in collaboration with Director José Huaman Turpo and Producer Alejandrina Calancha Monge to create the fourth documentary of “The Mysteries of the Andes” 9-film series. The objective of the series is to publicize the life, history, cosmovision and customs of native Andean and Amazonian villages through stories and cinematography.

We believe that filmmaking can serve as a way to protect and support the continued thriving of indigenous cultures, particularly today when so much wisdom and knowledge is disappearing.

This fourth documentary will be on the music, instruments, ceremonies and visions of communities across Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, and Argentina.

As Ayni, we have chosen to collaborate with José and Alejandrina because they are experienced indigenous filmmakers based in Cusco, Peru who create documentaries in a holistic process. This means that they work collaboratively with each native community, ensuring that it’s their voices that tell their stories. They also follow and respect their respective ritualistic and agricultural calendars. Nothing in the film is re-enacted, rather, all of the scenes and recordings happen as these one-of-a-kind moments occur. This is why the documentaries are in languages like Quechua, Huachipaeri and Machiguenga, and the leaders and main storytellers also take part in the post-production, giving feedback and approving the final version of the film. The first 3 films set in the Andes and Amazon were also made after long standing, reciprocal relationships with the communities, and this continues until today.

The fourth film on music and instruments from 5 South American countries will be interwoven with the customs that have kept these communities’ histories alive for millennia and how they embody their interconnectedness with the land and living beings surrounding them. These films are ultimately an archiving of memory, since so many rituals, languages and customs are disappearing every year.

The production and post-production of this fourth documentary will total about $20,000 with its completion set for the spring of 2020. During production the costs will go towards travel expenses including transportation, food and lodging; equipment such as hard disks and RAM; and filming support such as camera, lighting or sound assistance. During the post-production phase costs include sound and color correction, lab costs, subtitling into English and Spanish, visual effects, graphic design, etc.

We hope that you can support this unique and critical film project through a donation. The amount you give is completely up to you and is tax deductible since we are a 501c(3).

¡Thank you!

¡Gracias!
