Cory's Road to Healing & Recovery

Cory’s Story
August 31, 2017 our son, Cory was rushed to the emergency room in the early morning via Ross/West View EMS; this was the 2nd time Cory decided to hitch a ride with the medics within a two week time frame. The first time, he was feeling weak, body pain and fever; he spent some time in the hospital the first trip. This time, he was not in such good shape. Doctors discovered he was bleeding internally and it was pretty bad; within 10 minutes of arriving, Cory’s vitals plummeted, he was in critical condition. The room was filled with every doctor, nurse and aide in the emergency room, a central line was put in because he needed blood. 5 pints of blood, he also, had a warm saline drip to help warm his body temperature because it had dropped so low. Through all of the pain, being scared and uncertainty Cory remained his comical self, making the staff, his dad, Grandmother and myself laugh during the scariest and most stressful moments of our life.

The Diagnosis
That day, Cory was diagnosed with Colon Cancer. At 19 years old, it is hard to imagine hearing those words, knowing it could be a battle and change the course of your life. Cory listened to the doctor intently and handled it better than anyone expected. He told the doctor, “Ok. Well, I will beat this and survive. What do we need to do”?

Surgery
The surgery went well; the cancer was removed; along with his entire colon. He was released from the hospital after a short stay; However, Cory will be returning to the hospital in 3 to 4 weeks for another surgery. This will, hopefully be his last surgery and will confirm he is cancer free.

Road to Recovery
Unfortunately, Cory is not able to return to work for some time; nor is he going to be able to return to his duties as a Volunteer Firefighter at Station 191, Millvale Fire Department. We are asking for donations for medical bills, that won’t be covered by insurance and for everyday bills that may have to be put aside without your help.

Cory has been an inspiration and a hero to his fellow firefighters, friends and family. We would like to be able to be an inspiration to him and help him along this road to healing and recovery.

Thank you for taking the time to read Cory’s story, please donate, share on your Facebook and spread the word to a few people.
