My name is Monica Land. I'm a writer and producer from Chicago, Illinois. I'm also the great niece of civil rights icon, Fannie Lou Hamer, who many remember for being "sick and tired of being sick and tired."
I'm producing a documentary film of her life entitled, Fannie Lou Hamer’s America.
The film is told through the impassioned public speeches, personal interviews, and powerful songs of the fearless Mississippi sharecropper-turned-human-rights-activist.
Fannie Lou Hamer (Oct. 6, 1917 - Oct. 6, 2017)
Fannie Lou Hamer’s America is unique because not only does it feature rare artifacts and treasures from her life in civil rights, but it includes personal comments from my family that have never been heard before. But most of all, the film allows Aunt Fannie Lou, a dynamic and beloved speaker, to tell her own life story - in her own words - foregrounding such themes as the injustice of growing up black and poor, police brutality, quality healthcare and affordable nutrition for the poorest of the poor. Issues still - so very relevant today.
After a vicious jailhouse beating years earlier, and the stresses of hypertension and breast cancer, Aunt Fannie Lou died in 1977, at the age of 59.
Joining me in this project is nationally acclaimed filmmaker Keith Beauchamp, authors and scholars Drs. Davis Houck and Maegan Parker Brooks, and director Joe Davenport.
