My name is Natalie, I'm 35 years of age and I am a self harmer. I started self harming 11 years ago, after I was prematurely discharged from psychiatric hospital due to a lack of beds.
In the past decade, I have read about and talked with many people of all ages, affected by mental health issues and using self harm as a coping mechanism (as one example). Unfortunately, far too many people are without basic medical supplies, for one reason or another. Some are young adults who don't have the means or access, some are adults who can't afford them and others don't use them as an extension of their self harm affliction.
First aid is a right but more than that, it's a basic need. This is why I want to offer kits containing basic medical supplies, first aid advice and helpful telephone numbers and websites - to those in need.
STRAFE is a portmanteau of strong and safe, which are two elements I want the kit to represent. Strength, for help in fighting urges or abstaining and safety, for eliminating risk of infection and extensive injury. STRAFE Kit contents will include basic medical supplies (TBD) and various items (TBD) to aid in strength and distraction, along with first aid information and helpful resources to contact.
I want the STRAFE Kit to promote self care, in the hopes that one day, this may enable others to start their recovery from self harm.
With your help, I hope to offer these kits free of charge, with only shipping being payable by the receiver. I am currently only in receipt of disability benefits but I plan to invest my time, energy and passion, with what money I am able - into making this idea a reality.
There isn't a deadline for the creation of STRAFE Kit, as it is reliant on many factors. One of these is the need to practice personal self care, due to severe mental health issues. I am currently involved with my local Community Mental Health Team and awaiting long term treatment. I therefore please ask for your patience and understanding, so that I may be strong and safe, whilst helping others.
Any and all funds raised will be dedicated entirely to the creation of the STRAFE Kit and I will make sure the process is transparent, so that you may see how you are helping me, to help others.
As kit contents are currently to be determined (due to costs), I optimistically put £500 as a goal for this fundraiser. Kit contents and quantities will be determined by whatever funds I will graciously receive.
