The Pennsylvania National Fire Museum is located in the Midtown section of Harrisburg and occupies a fully restored Victorian era three-story firehouse built in 1899 for the former Reily Hose Company No. 10. The station was used actively until closed in 1980.
Following nearly 11 years sitting vacant and rapidly deteriorating, the building was re-acquired by the city and through major cooperation with Mayor Stephen R. Reed, the Harrisburg Bureau of Fire and city government it was extensively rebuilt as a fire museum and opened to the public as a world class museum in 1995.
To operate this world class fire museum, maintain exhibits and collections, raise the necessary funds for continued operation and staff the museum on a six day-a-week full-time schedule, a non-profit, all-volunteer organization was formed in 1992. We have been going strong ever since!
During our existence, we have received only minor financial support from local, state or federal government sources. Therefore we rely heavily on funds raised through memberships, museum admissions and rentals, gift shop sales and donations.
With the original major renovations over twenty years old, we now find ourselves in need of major building repairs to the roof, windows and facade of the building. As these capital expenses are over and above our normal operating budget, we now need your generous help or the 1899 Reily firehouse will continue to deteriorate causing irreparable harm to many of our unique exhibits on display. Within the past two years we have made expensive repairs to the aging air conditioning system.
We are asking for your contribution. Any amount will help us tremendously. The museum is a tax-exempt 501-c-3 non-profit organization. Please consider your tax exempt donation. We appreciate your continued support.
