4 Peaks 24 Hour Challenge. 4th May 2019

Donation protected
The aim of the 4Peaks2019 challenge is to reach the summit of the highest peak in each province in Ireland within 24 hours. The 3 of us will be attempting this on Saturday 4th of May 2019. The weekend of the May Bank Holiday.

We will donate all money raised to a fund that is being used for the development of a sports field at Jesus & Mary Secondary School, Gortnor Abbey, Crossmolina, Co. Mayo.

All of the students at the school will benefit from this initiative. This cause means a lot to Joe who is a teacher at the school and all 3 climbers are delighted to contribute to a cause which facilitates the health and well-being of young people in North Mayo.

The first of the Four Peaks is Mweelrea (814 metres), Connaught’s highest mountain. We will begin climbing this between 10 and 11pm on Friday May 3rd and we hope to summit shortly after midnight on the morning of Saturday May 4th. It is a boggy climb through streams and rivers up to a rocky summit which is steep and dangerous in places. Upon completing the decent of Mweelrea we will eat and change. Our support drivers will then begin the arduous drive to bring us to Kerry’s Carrauntoohil. This drive is 315km and will take almost 5 hours. We hope to arrive there before 6am.

The second mountain of the Four Peaks Challenge is Carrauntoohil (1,038 metres). Munster and Ireland’s highest mountain will begin to test the amount of training in our legs. We will take the Devil’s Ladder route which is 12km return. It’s the most direct and shortest route and is very strenuous. We hope to have this completed in around 5 hours. After repeating the eat & change routine we will commence the 4 hour 40-minute journey (322km) to the next climb. We should stop in Wicklow and begin climbing at around 3:30pm.

The third of the Four Peaks Challenge, Lugnaquilla (925 metres) is situated in the Wicklow Mountains. The first 300 metres of this is a very steep and difficult climb but after this it plateaus until near the summit. We aim to have this climb completed and to be back in the support vehicles before 7pm. Depending on our levels of fatigue this may stretch out further. Once we have eaten and changed we will travel the 3 hour/220km journey to Newcastle in Co. Down.

We hope to arrive at the last mountain Slieve Donard (850 metres) before 10pm. Northern Ireland and Ulster’s highest mountain is the final climb of our challenge. In order to complete the 1-day challenge successfully we will have to complete the gradual climb to the summit before midnight.

Thanks for any and all donations. I’m sure you will appreciate that this is a very difficult task we are undertaking.

Also, as well as donations, we would appreciate any moral support you can offer on the day or in the build up to the challenge. If you can help out with logistics, transport, meals etc. or if you would like to climb a leg of the journey with us it would be most welcome.

On the day of the climb we intend to have a live twitter/blog update of our progress so that anyone who is interested can monitor how we are getting on.

Thanks in advance for all support,

Joe Moran, Morgan Foley & Richard Morrow.
