Hospital/Emergency Care Jon Kimball

On January 9 2016, my 15 year old son was enjoying a day of fun sledding on the hills at Cottonwood Creek Park in Colorado Springs Co when he slammed into one of the fence posts at the bottom of the hill. He was unable to get up or move. His dad and about 5-8 other people came to his aid, they were able to carefully roll him onto someones flat "boogie board" style sleds and helped get him up the hill while another one called 911 for an ambulance. (Thank you random sledders that helped my son!)

We had no idea how bad he was.

He was rushed to the ER at Memorial Hospital via Ambulance were they found out the devistating extent of his injuries. When the Hospital staff discovered the extent of his injuries,  He was given an urgent inter -hospital transfer to Memorial Childrens via ambulance #2 this time with lights and sirens the whole way as he was now a trauma case.
We came to find out that he had prety major internal injuries and bleeding.

The Injuries / Diagnosis:

He has 2 broken ribs and a broken back(its not the spine itself but the little wings that come off the sides that the muscles attach to that are broke)...he bruised his lung but its not collapsed.

He has/had internal bleeding from the spleen and right kidney.

He shattered his spleen.

And disected an artery to his right kidney.

They did an angiogram at the hospital to place collagen in his spleen to stop the bleeding and he had to have a stent put in his artery going to his right kidney.
The right kidney was not getting blood so we wait to see how the repair works.
They were able to stop the spleen and kidney bleeding and open the artery and restore bloodflow to the kidney.
With His kidney they think it will regain function and said it looks to be 60% function up from 20-30%... He is in the icu to monitor for internal bleeding...
We wait to see how he progresses over the next 24 hours Before moving out of the icu.
They have to watch the kidney and spleen to make sure there is no infection and that the organs dont begin to die.
If that happens he may have to have a portion or all of his right kidney removed and possibly the spleen to....

We are hopeful that the repairs will work. It is still unknown and he may loose part or all of his Right Kidney and may loose his Spleen.  He s currently in stable condition.

We have been told that no matter what the outcome He will have a long recovery time because of his injuries.
We don't yet know how long he will be in the hospital but for now Jon will remain in ICU to be monitored for internal bleeding

Jon is a Sophmore in highschool and this year his favorite class has been strength training. One of the most dificult things he will be dealing with is that he enjoyed his strength training class so much, plus it has helped improve his confidence and self esteme he actually traded it for another "specials" option. This will not be an option for him when returning to school.

We appreciate any support and donations, all monies will go toward Jon, his medical needs, hospital bills, recovery and other needs we don't yet know about. At this time all we know for sure is He has a long road to recovery ahead of him.
