Hi, my name is Valerie Carranza. I am raising money because I would like to attend the 2013 Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans (SACNAS) National Conference.
I am currently a community college student majoring in Environmental Sciences. I am applying to 4-year universities this Fall and would like to earn a Ph.D. in the future. I became interested in the research world as a community college student, but, unfortunately, my college does not have opportunities to conduct scientific research. I had to search elsewhere and was fortunate enough to be accepted in the Research Experience for Undergraduates at the University of California, Irvine this summer. My research project involved investigating methane sources in the Los Angeles Basin using a mobile laboratory equipped with cavity ring-down spectrometers that measured methane, carbon dioxide, and other trace gases. It was an amazing experience because I was surrounded by passionate and incredibly knowledgeable scientists. I want to continue to be involved in the research environment meanwhile I am still in community college.
The 2013 SACNAS National Conference would be the perfect opportunity to continue being involved in the research community. I have been accepted to present my first research project at the SACNAS Conference. I am incredibly happy about my acceptance because I have never had the opportunity to attend a scientific conference. I am really drawn to this specific conference because I can meet researchers from backgrounds similar to mine and I can learn from their experiences and how they overcame their struggles. Unfortunately, I don't have the money to pay for my traveling expenses from Los Angeles, California to San Antonio, Texas ($500 round-trip) and to pay for the conference registration fee ($300). Any amount of money that you can donate to help me attend my first scientific conference is greatly appreciated! Thank you.
