2013 SACNAS National Conference
I am currently a community college student majoring in Environmental Sciences. I am applying to 4-year universities this Fall and would like to earn a Ph.D. in the future. I became interested in the research world as a community college student, but, unfortunately, my college does not have opportunities to conduct scientific research. I had to search elsewhere and was fortunate enough to be accepted in the Research Experience for Undergraduates at the University of California, Irvine this summer. My research project involved investigating methane sources in the Los Angeles Basin using a mobile laboratory equipped with cavity ring-down spectrometers that measured methane, carbon dioxide, and other trace gases. It was an amazing experience because I was surrounded by passionate and incredibly knowledgeable scientists. I want to continue to be involved in the research environment meanwhile I am still in community college.
The 2013 SACNAS National Conference would be the perfect opportunity to continue being involved in the research community. I have been accepted to present my first research project at the SACNAS Conference. I am incredibly happy about my acceptance because I have never had the opportunity to attend a scientific conference. I am really drawn to this specific conference because I can meet researchers from backgrounds similar to mine and I can learn from their experiences and how they overcame their struggles. Unfortunately, I don't have the money to pay for my traveling expenses from Los Angeles, California to San Antonio, Texas ($500 round-trip) and to pay for the conference registration fee ($300). Any amount of money that you can donate to help me attend my first scientific conference is greatly appreciated! Thank you.
I have great news. Yesterday I got a call from SACNAS who offered to cover the rest of my travel and lodging expenses! Luckily for me, some extra funding became available, and SACNAS saw my page and were impressed by all of your support and decided to help me out. This would not have been possible without all of your help -- thank you all so much!
Here's an update on how the funds will be spent:
So far, I've used your donations to pay for $315 registration fee, and I will use the remaining funds, which is $178 (GoFundMe and its partners deduct roughly 9% of the total), for ground transportation and conference-related expenses. In the case that money is left over after the conference, I will save it for the American Geophysical Union (AGU) conference this December. If anyone feels uncomfortable with any of this, please let me know, and I will refund your donation.
Again, I want to thank all of my supporters for making this happen, and thank you to everyone at SACNAS!! I am so lucky to have this opportunity, and I will make the most of it. Thank you.
My best wishes to you all,
Thank you for your kind words, Linda! Yes, it is a huge relief :)
Good things happen to good people! Congratulations. Now you don't have to stress about the fundraising. Yay!
Thanks. Need to wait for another paycheck, then I can contribute. I think you are amazing!
Hi Linda! The conference starts on October 3rd, 2013. I need to meet my funding goal to pay for my traveling expenses by latest mid-September.
This is super! When is the conference? When do you need to meet your funding goal?
