MALAWI: Empowering communities to become Sustainable and Self-sufficient

As I traveled alone throughout one of the most beautiful and dangerous parts of Africa, I was touched by the kindness, generosity and inclusiveness of the countries’ people. So much so, that I am moved and inspired to give back, and am requesting YOUR kindness, generosity, and help in doing so.
During my visit to Malawi, I met Shaun Williams, a co-founder of 3rd World Hope. While there, he invited me to tour the Tiziwane Pre-School/ Orphan Center including a store, a new chicken business, crop- filled fields, in Bandawe, a small village on the shores of Lake Malawi. I became very impressed with Shaun’s grassroots accomplishments and philosophy of empowering the community to become sustainable and self-sufficient through entrepreneurial effects.
So impressed, that I am dedicated to raising $5,000 so they can finish building a new primary school for 700-children, which includes: an office, a storeroom and a fully stocked library. We hope to put solar power throughout the school, which will allow us to put a few computers in with full syllabuses, as well.
In addition we are carrying out many improvements to the local hospital. So far we have established a new major surgery theater and are now looking to develop a radiology unit.

OUR MISSION
3rd World Hope is working in co-operation with disadvantaged communities in Africa to tackle poverty and malnutrition and create a safer environment for children to live. We do this by working closely with the local people, empowering them to become self-sufficient. We are learning everyday from the people we help.

ABOUT US
3rd World Hope was set up after two friends travelled through Africa. What struck these two most was that despite the obvious desperate poverty, they were welcomed everywhere with open arms and encouraged to share in what little the local people had.
On returning to the UK, the two friends set about fundraising to carry out a small project for an orphan center they had visited in Malawi. It was their way of trying to give something back to the community. With help and support from friends and family the small project grew to become a huge success. Not only were they able to repair and equip the orphan center, more importantly they provided sustainable resources, cultivated land to grow food and a water pump supplying clean water thereby enabling the whole village to become self sufficient.
As a result of this initial success, 3rd World Hope became a registered UK Charity in July 2009.
OUR VISION
Having witnessed, first-hand, the amazing difference this first project has made to the lives of the children involved, we now aim to continue our work improving the lives of other vulnerable children. Fuelled by our initial success, we now want to replicate this model in villages across Africa. We believe that by supporting, educating and empowering local communities to ‘help themselves’ we can eradicate, to some degree, the hopeless cycle of poverty that exists.
3rd World Hope now wants to continue to build similar orphan centers across Africa providing clean water, cultivated land and safe refuges that many children can call home. We believe all children have the right to a safe place to live, enough food to eat and clean water to drink. In order to try and break the cycle of extreme poverty, 3rd World Hope also believes that these children should have the opportunity of a good education. We are continuously fundraising to provide these basic human rights.
