Nolan's Story

Nolan was a typical sweet two year old boy who loved to be active and live life fully with mommy, daddy, friends and family when suddenly everything he knew changed. A sudden, rare, and life changing event brought everything to a halt. On January 30th 2016, in a matter of 1 hour, Nolan lost complete mobility and control from his neck down due to a very rare neuro-immune disorder called Transverse Myelitis.
Many grueling, scary days were spent in Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh ICU, filled with plasmapheresis treatments, countless MRIs, fevers and other complications. Nolan and his family fought with strength and positivity. As Nolan stabilized he moved to The Children Institute of Pittsburgh. Here, Nolan and family worked tirelessly every day to try to regain Nolan's mobility while learning new equipment, procedures, and daily routines to accommodate Nolan's "new normal" for when he would leave the institute to return home. With the help of many specialists, rehab personal, family and friends Nolan made it home. Shortly after Nolan returned home the family welcomed a joyous event. Nolan became a big brother as Henry, a happy/healthy baby boy, joined the family.
In January of 2017, due to special therapy and rehab needs, Nolan needed to move to Louisville, KY to further his recovery. Currently at Frazier Rehabilitation Hospital Nolan undergoes daily rehab. He gets electrical stimulation on multiple areas of his body. With the help of a harness he gets assisted walks daily on a treadmill. As of now, Nolan has regained some shoulder strength, core strength, and limited arm movement. With the help of a boppy Nolan can sit up on his own. Recently with a universal cuff Nolan fed himself for the first time in a long time. And with some limited arm movements he enjoys games on an iPad.
Nolan's parents, Jennifer and Eric, are continuously by his side cheering him on and doing everything they can to further his progress. They currently switch weeks with one parent in Louisville with Nolan and one parent staying back home in PA with Henry, the baby. They both continue to work and take care of other family needs. Due to limited living situations in Louisville Jen, or Eric, stay the night with Nolan in the Ronald McDonald House. We are hoping to provide a better option for the Nachreiner family to help ease the burden of this situation. If Nolan continues to improve with his rehab he can be a part of the Frazier Rehab program until the end of the year. Anything you can give helps. Thoughts, prayers, and kind words also make a difference.
Thank you.
