Scott's Medical Fund

Donation protected
You're probably here because you know my cousin Scott Weir, or someone who loves him.

He was admitted to the University of Maryland Medical Center on January 21st with a massive infection in his left foot (a common complication of diabetes).  He will be undergoing his fourth surgery today and is facing amputation of a significant portion of his foot, or possibly a below-the-knee amputation if his medical team feels they are unable to salvage the remaining portion of his foot.

Regardless of the outcome of this surgery (and additional surgical procedures that may follow), Scott will be facing a long recovery once he is released from the hospital. He will most likely be discharged to an inpatient care facility, followed by months of rehab and physical therapy. He will require some sort of prothesis.

In addition to his medical expenses, Scott will face logistical challenges during his recovery that will have to be addressed. His doctors have indicated that some aspects of his living situation and employement may not be workable as he goes through the process of healing and regaining his mobility. Unfortunately, his closest family members (his aunt and cousins) live about two hours away, so we will have to develop a network of resources to support him through his recovery.

Scott is in the process of applying for short-term disability, which will provide 60% of his salary for the next 12 weeks. Obviously, this will not begin to cover the significant medical expenses resulting from this injury, let alone the future expenditures that will be required to facilitate his return to a normal life. And that's where this Go Fund Me comes in.

In the course of a few weeks, Scott's entire life has been turned upside down. Coping with the loss of a limb and facing the arduous task of regaining normal function is a lot for anyone to deal with. We're hopeful that contributions to this fund will allow Scott to better focus on his health and recovery by minimizing the financial impact of this situation.

Scott was hesitant when we broached the subject of establishing this fund; he'd much rather be generous with other people than be the recipient of your generosity. :-) But I know he will be exceedingly grateful for any help you are willing to provide. Not in a position to contribute financially? Your kind thoughts, prayers, and supportive messages are also greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much for your time and consideration!
