Mackenzy's Round 3 Battle

Donation protected
These are the heart felt words of Deana, Mackenzy's mother. Deana is such an amazing mother of 4 girls. After you read her story please show your support to this family. Donations can allow for more time together at the hospital, an extra trip for ice cream, and lighten the load of a stressed beyond limits family.

Deana shares..."I have shared Kenzy's story before. Today starts the month for Children's Cancer Awareness. Go Gold! Everyone is welcome to use my profile picture in honor of Kenzy. Reposting Kenzy's story. Sept 9th marks 2yrs from her relapse, 6month remission scans and now her 18th month scans are scheduled to be completed. Today she is a happy 8th grader who is planning her Golden Birthday next month. Straight A student with a compassionate heart. If your are friends with her on Instagram, you know how comfortable she is in her own skin, battle wounds and all.

Mackenzy on July 14th, 2011 was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in her left femur. She underwent 37 weeks of chemotherapy schedule including surgery on Oct 13, 2011 to remove the tumor, left femur and bone salvage surgery with use of a cadaver bone. It was the day before her 10th birthday. After the first round of chemo, Kenzy's femur broke while laying in bed and had to be in a spica cast for 3 months from her mid chest to her feet. She was bed panned and carried everywhere when a wheelchair was not feasible. She also was included in a study for medication received to eliminate hearing loss and donated tumor and tissue samples to the U of I Hospital for further research. Surgery team is located at University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics and Oncology team is located at Blank Children's Hospital. Last chemo was given April 3, 2012. At 10yrs old Kenzy's weight reached as low as 40lbs.

During 16 months in remission, Mackenzy donated her time to charities like Make A Wish of Iowa, Angels For Sam, Miracle Travel Works, Guns N Hoses, and many more. She also enjoyed being a kid again.

September 9, 2013...Kenzy went to her routine cardiology appointment due to side effects to her heart rhythm from chemo. During that visit, it was found that she relapse from an Ultra sound and XRay. Kenzy was diagnosed with relapsed osteosarcoma and anterior mediastinal masses. Kenzy underwent few rounds of chemo in hopes to shirk the tumor for a better prognosis and to eliminate the danger from trying to have it removed. Have about a 50/50 shot that chemo will work. Surgery to remove the tumor that was laying near her heart, lung, spine, esophagus, and major arteries was completed without margin on November 29th, 2013. Kenzy also needed 1/3 of the top area of her lung removed as well. Side effect from surgery was a chyle leak that require a 6 week 20gram a day diet and Horner's syndrome. There was in the pathology report 1-2mm of viable cells and suspicious cells found in the fluid from her chest tube while recovering from surgery. Mackenzy received 2 additional rounds of chemo, unable to complete the 3rd due to her blood pressure dropping dangerously low and kidney damage. Kenzy needed to take 13 additional pills daily in order to keep her kidney functions at low end of normal. Feb.10th was another scare and surgery to biopsy a spot in her lung was scheduled Feb 17, 2014, but was cancelled after they discovered the spot on her lung was from bacteria infection. Feb. 18 began Kenzy's move to Rochester, MN to start her 6 weeks of High dose Radiation treatment. April 3rd was her last treatment and began her 2nd remission. June 26 was Mackenzy's first of many N.E.D. scan and port of finally removed July 2nd.

Remembering back when only our Blank doctors had hope. There was hope, but little confidence. The whole team was scared. Took Mackenzy to break down and tell her doctors that she is moving forward with treatment, cause she is going to fight cause she wants to live. Miracles happen and she is here to tell this story. There was not protocol the 2nd time, just a lot of praying. This is why this month of Children's Cancer Awareness is needed and our voices to be heard, more funds needs to be raised for our kids. This is just one journey. There 46 new ones every day."

Thursday Sept 24th Mackenzy will be having surgery to remove a mass in her lung. The cancer has come back a third time. Please support this family with your donations and prayers
