Team 3489 “Category 5” is a FIRST Robotics team located in Summerville, South Carolina.  They have students from Ashley Ridge and Summerville High School, Palmetto Scholars Academy and other charter schools. The team consists of fun loving and hard working students who know how to get things done!  They practice in a professional work environment, the Bosch manufacturing plant.

Team 3489 is split up into four sub-teams:

• Mechanical Engineering (Design, fabrication, assembly)

• Electrical Engineering (DC controls, wiring)

• Programming (JAVA)

• Multimedia & Outreach (outreach, business development, marketing, 3D animation, photography, web-site development, and more)

Their goals are to learn about new technology and teach others that challenges in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) can be great fun!

This year after competing in the Palmetto Regionals and the Smoky Mountain Regionals, they earned a wildcard spot for the World Championships in Houston.  Also captured the Imagery Award - In honor of Jack Kamen, Dean’s father, for his dedication to art and illustration and his devotion to FIRST. This award celebrates attractiveness in engineering and outstanding visual aesthetic integration of machine and team appearance.

The funds for this campaign will help get their team and their mentors to Houston, TX where they will compete with and against teams from over 39 countries around the world.  This is a once in a lifetime experience for these high school students.  They will join over 1300 other teams and 30,000 youths in this Coopertition.

The FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) pairs high-school students with professional adult mentors to design and build robots that compete against one another in this high energy “Varsity Sport for the Mind™”.  Each year at the Kickoff in January, a new, challenging game is introduced. These exciting competitions combine the practical application of science and technology with the fun, intense energy and excitement of a championship-sporting event. Teams are encouraged to display Gracious Professionalism™ and to cooperate while competing – known as “Coopertition™".

Students get to:

• Learn from professional engineers

• Build and compete with a robot of their own design

• Learn and use sophisticated software and hardware

• Compete and cooperate in alliances and tournaments

• Earn a place in the World Championship

• Qualify for over $20 million in college scholarships
