Walkaid For A Stroke AVM Survivor

In 2015 I was 9 months pregnant with my first child. I woke up one morning not feeling that well and was unable to stand up or balance. I called out to my husband as I felt strange and was very scared. I told him to call 911. That is the last thing I remember. An ambulance came and took me to Foothills hospital as they thought I was having a stroke. They did an MRI and a CT Scan and found I had an AVM in my brain that had burst and was bleeding. My child went into distress so they immediately did an emergency c-section. They then whisked me away for emergency brain surgery to stop the bleed. I was in lCU for 5 consecutive days in a medical induced coma. Once I was stable I was transferred to the acute stroke unit. I stayed there for another week or so and then was as transferred to rehabilitation. A week into rehab my neurologist decided to operate to remove the AVM. This was done on my birthday . After surgery and another week of recovery I was transferred back to rehabilitation. I stayed in the hospital for 4 months and then went into outpatient therapy. I did outpatient therapy for another 8 months until I graduated as I like to call it. Now I'm on my own. My stroke doctor suggested I try the Walkaid as I have foot drop as a result of the stroke. The Walkaid is an portable electrical stimulation machine that improves the walking ability of people with foot drop. I will be using the money to purchase the Walkaid and supplies as it not covered under Alberta Health Care or my insurance. I am hoping to raise the funds in the next couple of weeks. It would mean a great deal to me and help me return to a normal way of life without huge foot and ankle braces. I would love to be able chase after my daughter one day!
