Hi. My name is Kenny Cheung. I graduated from Perkins School for the Blind in 2015. After graduating, I explored different career paths so that I could find jobs I really like. It took me a while to find something I loved, but now that I have, I want to give it my best effort.
Last year I began volunteering at the Massachusetts Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired, where I teach people how to use assistive technology. Being there has shown me that I love technology and want to help people learn. This inspired me to start taking coding classes, where I learned HTML, the code that makes up most internet pages. I discovered that I picked up code quickly and wanted to gain more knowledge on the subject. It was then that I decided that I wanted to go to college so that I can become a web developer. Ultimately, my goal is to be able to build websites for people and open a business training people on how to use different kinds of accessible technology.
As a blind person, I receive services that can pay for my college classes. However, there's a lot that isn't covered such as transportation costs, meals, and other miscellaneous needs of a college student. Since my family and I can not handle all the expensive myself, I am reaching out to my network for support. Blind people have a high unemployment rate and low graduating rate because of the barriers we face. It is my hope that I will not be held back from achieving my goals by lack of funding.
