3 Big Swims for 3 Great Charities
I will be completing three marathon swims in 2017 and have decided to do this for 3 wonderful charities, all of which are very important to me for a number of reasons.
My first charity is Down Syndrome Kerry. My brother-in-law, Cathal Griffin who has Down Syndrome, has never let this get in his way and is a constant source of inspriation for me. This wonderful charity has played a huge part in his successes and the work they do for many families across the county is fantastic.
My second charity is Glow Hearts 4 Crumlin. This is a local charity that was started by mothers, all of whom had children born with a congenital heart defect (CHD). They formed the group to raise funds for Our Lady's Children's Hospital in Crumlin and to raise awareness of CHDs. My beautiful niece, Sadie, was born with a CHD and thanks to the great work of the nurses, doctors and surgeons in Crumlin she is fighting fit now.
My third charity is the Childhood Cancer Foundation. I don't think there is a family in Ireland that hasn't been affected by cancer. This charity funds research, play therapy and vital equipment used in St. John's paediatric cancer ward in Our Lady's Children's Hospital Crumlin - a most worthy cause for the most vunerable in our society.
Having researched the charities, read some of the stories and seen first hand what these children have to go through.....my three swims are nothing compared to that. However, I intend on raising as much as I can regardless of "fundraising targets".
Your support, monetary and morally, will be much appreciated.
ALL monies raised will go to the charities as I will be self-financing the flights, accommodation and entry fees.
The swims and dates are as follows:
Tampa Bay Marathon Swim (24 miles): 17th March 2017
Catalina Island (21 miles): 1st-2nd June 2017
20 Bridges Swim, New York (28 miles): 24th June 2017
Update: the swim has been changed to Saturday due to better swimming conditions that day. My start time will be 8.30am (12.30pm - Irish time). Spread the word.
I will post the link to my tracker tomorrow or Saturday morning.
Happy St. Patrick's Day everyone!
As the time is ticking down to my first challenge...Tampa Bay Marathon Swim ( www.distancemattters.com), I've decided to post some interesting facts about the swim as well as a map of my projected route! If you've any questions reply to this post and I'll answer them.
#1. Water temperature will be about 21 degrees (nice)
#2. Distance will be 24 miles
#3. Yes, there are sharks there! Most common type are hammerheads and bullsharks
#4. Jellyfish? I'm not actually sure but there must be....unless the sharks have eaten them all!
#5. Time it will take me....anywhere between 10 and 13 hours
#6. I breath to my left so I will see land all the way during the swim
#7. There will be a kayaker beside me during the swim as well as a support boat.
#8. I'm not allowed to touch the kayak or boat at any stage during the swim or the swim will be null and void!
#9. My feeds consist mainly of fluids (carbohydrate and water) as well as some protein bars ( www.originbars.ie, hopefully.....I like the mint ones Niall!) and some jelly babies. I will feed every 30-40 minutes while treading in the water.
#10. There are no wetsuits allowed....togs, goggles and my Irish (Shamrock) hat because it will be St. Patrick's Day! All the crew will be kitted out in Irish gear too for the swim....we will post photos.
They are going to come in really useful over the next number of months! Pity I forgot my togs for my morning swim, don't think Tralee Sports Complex ( www.facebook.com/traleesportscomplex/) and its clientele would appreciate a "cap only" naked 37 year old doing 5k in the pool.....will have to wait and go at lunch when reinforcement arrive!
The drive is on now to try and raise as much as possible for this charity as well as my other two well deserving charities: Down Syndrome Kerry and Glow Hearts 4 Crumlin. Dig deep!
I have been quiet for the past few weeks as training has picked up a bit. There are only 7 weeks to go before my first swim (Tampa Bay)!!!!
From this week on, I will be posting regular updates on my training and trying to encourage more of you to donate to my fantastic charities:
1. Down Syndrome Kerry ( www.downsyndromekerry.ie)
2. Glow Hearts 4 Crumlin ( https://www.facebook.com/Glowhearts4crumlin/)
3. The Childhood Cancer Foundation ( http://www.childhoodcancer.ie/)
I might even get to introduce you to some special guests!!! Keep an eye out.
