"The Plight for Equality - A Luta Continua"
On Thursday August 29, Freedom House Detroit, and KICK (two Detroit, MI nonprofit organizations), is hosting a fundraiser at The Charles H. Wright Museum of African-American History highlighting the plight of LGBT individuals around the world.
Frank Mugisha, Ugandan LGBT rights activist, executive director of Sexual Minorities Uganda, and recipient of the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award (2011), has accepted our invitation to join us for this event. Now we are in need of the funds to pay for travel and hotel expenses.
The event will begin with a screening of "Call Me Kuchu", a film that profiles four openly LGBT individuals in Uganda "“ among them, the late David Kato, Uganda's first openly gay man. Immediately after the film, there will be a panel discussion featuring Frank Mugisha, who was a colleague and close friend of Kato. The panel will also include representatives from a range of local LGBT rights supporters.
We believe a conversation is necessary to secure and uphold the basic human rights of all people. The plight of the LBGT struggle for equality throughout the world can no longer be ignored.
Please consider supporting this event by making a donation that specifically covers the cost of Frank Mugisha's round trip airfare and his hotel stay while in Detroit, MI.
