We are raising funds to build a new Natural playscape for the children of Portland Maine and the Riverton Community.

Riverton School is on the outer edge of Portland. The school is a community center with a pool, a public library branch, community gardens and sports fields. The area is used 7 days a week and all times of the day.  There is currently one playground at the school for 450 students, ages 4-11.  The current playground equipment was installed 12 years ago and is designed for children ages 7-12.

The new proposed natural playscape will be the first thing you see as you enter Riverton community center. It would be a welcoming play area with benches and gardens for all members of the community.  When people walk to Riverton community center they will have to pass this welcoming spot. It  will give our community a bright spot at the edge of the city.

One crucial aspect of this new playground is making it accessible for students with wheel chairs. The current playground offers one handicapped swing for the least mobile students. These students will be able to explore the new playground in a way they never have. They will be part of the play with their peers instead of just watching.

The youngest learners spend most of their day on this side of the school. At this time they have some paved space and a large open hill covered in grass as a play space. Our new natural playscape will give them easy access for recess and quick body breaks. The benches and gardens will also offer a natural classroom experience in the warmer months.

This playground will be used by the 450 Students at  Riverton daily. It will also be used in the off school hours by families and members of the Riverton Community in Portland. With the money raised, thousands of people will get to enjoy this new natural playscape and community space for relaxing and making family memories.

Thank you for your donation.

We are still working hard on getting the playground started. We are looking forward to getting the first sand boxes built this school year. The students are making holes all over the back playground, because they love to dig!

We are looking forward to the warmer weather. Our plan is to build the first piece of the playground, some sandboxes this spring. Two new sand boxes will be installed. One will be a traditional low sand box and the other will be a stand up sand box. This sand box will allow children with mobility issues be able to access the new equipment and interact with their peers.
